Rose Mortanas was the daughter of Luther Mortanas and the sister of Phelps. Her existence was itself exceptional: vampires are not ordinarily capable of having children, yet Mortanas fathered both Rose and Phelps. Rose became the center of the bargain that drove Mortanas’s centuries-long program of soul harvesting and ultimately brought his conflict with the Brass Blades to its final resolution.
Rose was murdered, one of the personal losses that transformed Mortanas’s later life. He responded by bargaining directly with Veshar to preserve her life rather than allow her death to become final. The precise condition in which the bargain sustained Rose is not well documented, but its cost is known. Mortanas was required to deliver mortal souls to Vharath according to a quota that doubled at each required interval.
Mortanas met that obligation for centuries using a unique ability to seize mortal souls within Creation without infernal contracts and send them into Vharath. Veshar did not grant him that ability, and its method was never recovered or reproduced. The steadily increasing quota eventually became catastrophic in scale; by 8753 SE, preserving Rose required Mortanas to deliver 393,216 souls in the next payment.
The Brass Blades confronted Mortanas before he could meet that quota. His defeat ended the arrangement that had held Rose in life, and Rose was finally able to pass into the afterlife rather than remain sustained through her father’s bargain. In the years that followed, Darieth Ariessus founded an orphanage in Rose’s honor on the grounds of Mortanas’s former castle in eastern Tadrium, transforming a place associated with her father’s obsession into one dedicated to the care of children.
