The Ancient Kindred is the collective name given to Eshar, Veshar, Othuun, and Naevra, the four foundational beings whose actions established the earliest persistent structures of Creation. They predate the ordinary gods and the histories of mortal civilizations. They were not a pantheon in the later religious sense, nor were they four rulers dividing a finished cosmos among themselves. Their relationships, disagreements, and attempts to make persistence possible within the Nascent Expanse helped determine what Creation could become.
Othuun brought forth genuinely new forms and possibilities, while Naevra preserved enough continuity for things to remain themselves through change and accumulate history. The twins Eshar and Veshar approached relationship and order from opposing directions. Eshar emphasized participation, accommodation, and the ability of beings to influence the relationships shaping them; Veshar emphasized authority, assigned responsibility, and structures capable of constraining what participants might otherwise choose. None of these principles was sufficient by itself, and the earliest stability of Creation depended upon all four.
Their disagreements eventually became the First War. The conflict was not a simple division of benevolent and malevolent powers. Othuun aligned primarily with Eshar and Naevra with Veshar, but both alliances developed serious internal reservations as the war escalated. Attempts to force incompatible principles into a single resolution culminated in the First Paradox, the destruction of the Broken Hour, and the death of Aevareth. Those events demonstrated that the Kindred themselves could endanger the coherence of the reality they had helped establish.
The war ended through the Concord of Creation, which imposed enduring limits upon all four. The settlement restricted Veshar’s ability to permanently assign the identity and purpose of sapient beings without genuine consent, required Eshar to accept that freely chosen relationships can create real obligations, limited Othuun’s direct foundational creation, and made Naevra responsible for continuity at the scale of coherent Creation. The Kindred also created Jhadric together so that authority over mortal souls would not belong exclusively to any one of them.
The Ancient Kindred still exist, but their relationships with ordinary Creation are heavily shaped by the Concord and by later events such as the Sundering. Eshar and Veshar now maintain Lethara and Vharath as outclaves within the Nascent Expanse, while Othuun and Naevra remain deeply connected to the continuing structure of Creation. Their influence is therefore foundational without making them ordinary sovereigns over everything that followed.
Most mortals know little of this history with confidence. Surviving religions and scholarly traditions preserve fragments, titles, contradictory myths, and occasional traces of events far older than recorded civilization. The guarded tradition of the Djozanates of the Kenai Mountains is the principal exception, preserving substantially more reliable knowledge of the Kindred and the earliest history of Creation than is available to ordinary scholars. Even there, the teaching is secret; the term Ancient Kindred itself remains a later collective description rather than a name known to have been used by the four.
