The Crownfire is an elite military formation serving the Sultan of Brass and the City of Brass. It is committed when ordinary formations are unlikely to be sufficient: exceptionally dangerous enemies, critical defenses, hostile planar environments, breaches threatening important infrastructure, and battles in which the loss of a single position could decide a larger campaign. The Crownfire is therefore not simply another legion, but a concentration of soldiers whose experience and capabilities justify using them where failure would be unusually costly.
Service in the Crownfire carries considerable prestige. Selection normally follows an established military reputation rather than serving as an ordinary entry into the Sultan’s forces, and surviving a long career within the formation can elevate a soldier’s standing among officers, nobles, and political patrons. That prestige also makes the Crownfire politically significant, since celebrated veterans may continue to possess influence long after wounds, age, or changing circumstances end active service.
The formation’s exact strength and organization have varied with the needs of different rulers and eras. Its importance lies less in a fixed number of soldiers than in the expectation that it can assemble the specialists and experienced combatants required for threats outside the normal assumptions of a campaign. This has included enemies entering Xathoryn from other realms as well as unusually powerful opponents native to the Realm of Flame.
Zokhail The Mighty served in the Crownfire before founding the Brass Blades. He was badly wounded during a major frost giant assault on the City of Brass, and those injuries ended his ability to continue in the formation. His reputation as a Crownfire veteran later helped the new mercenary organization secure contracts from powerful efreeti patrons who otherwise would have had little reason to trust an untested company.
