Zokhail the Mighty was a veteran of the Crownfire and the founder of the Brass Blades. His military reputation in the City of Brass allowed the new company to secure powerful patrons almost immediately, and the organization he created remained active for nearly seven thousand years before its catastrophic break with the Sultan of Brass in 8496 SE.
Crownfire Veteran
Before founding the Brass Blades, Zokhail served in the Crownfire, the elite formation used by the City of Brass against threats too dangerous or strategically important for ordinary forces. His service placed him among the city’s most prestigious soldiers and gave him experience operating at the level expected of those entrusted with exceptional military problems.
Zokhail’s Crownfire career ended after a major frost giant assault on the City of Brass. He was badly wounded while defending the city, and the injuries left him unable to continue carrying out his former duties. Surviving accounts do not reliably establish who commanded the frost giants, what wider conflict produced the attack, or how such a force reached Xathoryn, but the assault was serious enough to require Crownfire involvement rather than being remembered as an isolated raid.
His injuries ended one career without ending his usefulness. Zokhail retained the reputation, contacts, and credibility he had accumulated in service to the city, all of which became essential to what he built afterward.
Founding the Brass Blades
In 1523 SE, Zokhail founded the Brass Blades. The company occupied a practical space between the City of Brass’s formal military and the private needs of powerful patrons. The Brass Legions could wage conventional campaigns and the Crownfire could confront exceptional battlefield threats, but neither force was ideally suited to distant work in other realms where an official military deployment might be expensive, politically provocative, or simply unnecessary.
The Brass Blades specialized in those problems. They traveled through Vergeways, operated in unfamiliar environments, negotiated with foreign peoples, and accepted military, exploratory, recovery, and other dangerous contracts beyond Xathoryn. Wealthy merchants and efreeti noble houses became regular clients, and even the Sultan employed the organization on occasion.
Zokhail’s standing as a former Crownfire veteran was crucial in the company’s early years. Powerful patrons who would have had little reason to trust an untested mercenary organization could instead evaluate it through the reputation of a soldier already proven in defense of the city. Over time the organization developed a reputation independent of its founder, but Zokhail remained the figure around whom its institutional history began.
The Melting of the Blades
The relationship between the Brass Blades and the City of Brass ended in 8496 SE. While working for an efreeti noble, the organization became implicated in treason against the Sultan of Brass. The surviving Blades later disputed whether the company had knowingly participated or had been manipulated by its patron, and the records that might have established what actually occurred were lost.
The Sultan’s response was decisive. Assets accessible to the government were seized, the Brass Blades were expelled from the city, and Zokhail was imprisoned within the Sultan’s vaults. Because of the political and commercial influence of Brass throughout Xathoryn, the formal expulsion from the city became in practice an exile from most of the realm.
The surviving organization remembered the event as the Melting of the Blades. Zokhail did not accompany the company into exile, and the later history of the Brass Blades unfolded without the founder who had led it for millennia.
Legacy
Zokhail’s principal legacy is the institution that survived him. The Brass Blades eventually crossed the physical universes, recruited members with no connection to Xathoryn, and established a permanent base at Brass Bastion in Elgaard in 8721 SE. By then the company had become something very different from the organization Zokhail originally created, but it continued to trace its identity to his decision to turn Crownfire experience into an independent planar company.
His known history ends with imprisonment after the Melting of the Blades. No reliable account in the surviving organizational history establishes a later release, death, or return to public life. Whatever became of him after 8496 SE, the company he founded outlived its place in the City of Brass and became part of the history of Kor Sirok itself.
