Lundarbrekka is the ruined site of the first substantial Asnor settlement on Inis Cailean. It was founded during the early expansion of Asnorland by Gamli Brynjolfsson, one of the sons of Brynjolf Erobreren. The settlement ultimately failed, leaving Inis Cailean outside effective Asnor control despite the Stadtholder’s continuing historical claim to the island’s Thegndom.
The ruins have attracted repeated expeditions over the last three millennia. Some coastal expeditions have returned safely, and several artifacts have been recovered from Lundarbrekka, but attempts to establish another permanent settlement have repeatedly been driven away by severe storms and cold. Expeditions that have ventured deep into the island’s interior have an especially grim history, with none known to have returned.
Archaeological finds show that arcane magic played a significant role in Lundarbrekka. Surviving artifacts bear enchantments whose purposes are no longer understood, and some evidence suggests that Asnor warriors there combined martial training with spellcasting. Fragmentary records also describe a weather-controlling orb or stone that made the settlement more prosperous.
Later Asnor tradition transformed these discoveries into the story of Gamli’s Folly, a cautionary tale about relying too heavily on wizards and arcane power. The legend is culturally influential, but the surviving evidence does not establish that magic caused Lundarbrekka’s destruction. Stories about the settlement are also frequently used to warn of the dangers of the island’s interior and of the long conflict between Asnor settlers and the Skyre Folk.
