Inis Cailean is the southernmost major island of the Skyre Islands. Its latitude, exposed coasts, and mountainous interior make it one of the coldest and harshest parts of the archipelago. Snow, severe winds, difficult upland travel, and short favorable seasons have limited permanent Asnor settlement far more than on the islands to the north.
The island is traditionally associated with Cain Cailean, whose resistance to Asnor expansion became one of the foundational stories of both Skyre and Asnor history. Gamli Brynjolfsson, one of the sons of Brynjolf Erobreren, led the first substantial Asnor settlement of the island and founded Lundarbrekka. That settlement eventually failed, and later attempts to establish another durable Asnor presence have likewise been unable to hold the island.
The Stadtholder of Asnorland still claims the Thegndom of Inis Cailean, but the title represents inherited sovereignty rather than effective territorial rule. Coastal expeditions can reach parts of the island, while journeys deep into the interior have developed a reputation for disappearing entirely.
The ruins of Lundarbrekka preserve evidence of the failed Asnor presence, including traces of unusual arcane practices that later became associated with the cautionary story of Gamli’s Folly. In 8723 SE, Cap Tan Ro’geers also recovered the long-lost Mantle of Rektesh from a cavern on Inis Cailean during the Asnor Succession War of 8723 SE. The discovery renewed the island’s importance in Asnor tradition even though it did not translate into renewed political control.
