Common Name: The Wellspring
Deity: Maritana
Type: Divine Realm
Origin: Preexisting living realm claimed and reshaped by Maritana
Native Inhabitants: Aquatic and amphibious peoples
Fontara, more commonly called the Wellspring, is the divine realm of Maritana. It is a predominantly oceanic realm defined by extraordinary biological diversity, adaptation, environmental change, and the continual creation of new living relationships. The common name refers to the proliferation of life rather than to water itself, which remains fundamentally connected to Nymothun.
Fontara existed before Maritana made it her home. Its seas already supported complex ecosystems and native peoples, and the realm’s capacity for biological richness was one of the qualities that drew her to it. She claimed and reshaped the realm gradually, deepening relationships among seas, reefs, islands, coasts, and living forms rather than replacing what she found with an entirely new creation.
Appearance
Most of Fontara is ocean. Warm shallow seas filled with reefs give way to enormous deep basins, some illuminated by living organisms rather than sunlight. Kelp forests extend across great distances, volcanic islands rise and disappear over long periods, and wetlands and estuaries form where rivers carry nutrients into broader seas.
The boundary between land and water is particularly changeable. Tides, erosion, sediment, storms, reefs, and living organisms reshape coastlines continually, and settlements often adapt to movement rather than attempt to hold every shore in one permanent position. Floating communities, structures built to move with tides, and settlements distributed across reef systems are common enough that mortal ideas of a fixed coastline can seem unnecessarily rigid.
Life exists at nearly every scale. Some organisms resemble those of Kor Sirok, while others developed under conditions with no close physical-world equivalent. New ecological relationships emerge continually as species migrate, environments change, and existing organisms alter the conditions under which other forms can survive.
Native Peoples
Fontara contains native sapient peoples as well as immense non-sapient ecosystems. Many are aquatic or amphibious, while others inhabit islands, exposed reefs, floating habitats, or coastal regions. Their histories predate the arrival of many mortal souls and do not begin as servants created for Maritana.
Their relationship with the goddess varies widely. Some cultures center religious life upon her, others recognize her as a powerful patron without making her the focus of all worship, and some maintain traditions in which her role is comparatively limited. Maritana generally tolerates this diversity because a realm defined by adaptation would contradict itself if every society were forced into one cultural pattern.
Political relationships can be complicated by environments that change physically over time. Territorial claims may follow migration routes, reef systems, currents, spawning grounds, or seasonal coastlines rather than fixed borders. Visitors who assume aquatic societies organize space exactly as terrestrial kingdoms do can misread local politics badly.
Change and Creation
Ecological creation in Fontara occurs through accumulated relationships. A reef alters currents enough to form a lagoon, the lagoon supports organisms unable to survive in open water, those organisms change sediment and chemistry, and eventually a habitat exists that no single participant designed. Such processes can be especially vivid in the Wellspring without becoming instantaneous or arbitrary.
Extinction also occurs. Maritana does not preserve every species forever, and the realm is not a museum of every life-form that has ever existed. What matters is that living systems remain capable of responding, diversifying, and producing another future after loss. Regions damaged by catastrophe may recover into something different rather than return perfectly to their previous state.
This makes Fontara a place of extraordinary study for naturalists, healers, and scholars of adaptation. It can also be dangerous. New forms of life are not automatically benign, and ecosystems successful in one region can become destructive when moved into another.
Souls in the Wellspring
Jhadric sends souls to Fontara when the sea, ecological renewal, adaptation, or sustaining living environments became central to their mortal identities. Fishers, coastal navigators, marine healers, naturalists, protectors of breeding grounds, and people who helped communities adapt to environmental change may all find strong affinity with the realm.
Some souls retain bodies close to those they knew in mortality and live on islands or coasts. Others gradually adopt forms suited to aquatic existence or other environments they could not have inhabited before death. These transformations are not compulsory; they arise where a new form becomes meaningful to the soul’s relationships rather than because Fontara erases previous identity.
Maritana’s Presence
Maritana is encountered throughout Fontara rather than associated with one permanent palace. Stories place her near newborn reefs, during migrations, at the emergence of islands, in deep waters where unfamiliar species first appear, or within environments recovering from catastrophe. She is often recognized less by a spectacular manifestation than by unusual vitality and rapid formation of new ecological connections around her.
The Wellspring does not present creation as a single finished act. Its seas continually demonstrate that life can alter an environment, be altered by it in return, and create possibilities that neither side contained alone.
