The Cheldon are a turtle-like people native to southern Aesala, especially the coasts and waterways surrounding the Scalded Coast. They use standard Tortle ancestry rules for game purposes, but Tortle is not an in-world name in Kor Sirok. Cheldon populations are relatively small and remain concentrated in the same broad region as the Lizardfolk.
Homeland and Settlements
Cheldon communities are most common along the coast and near major waterways. Their territory overlaps with that of the Lizardfolk, but Cheldon settlement is more strongly oriented toward the sea and navigable water, while Lizardfolk populations extend farther through the jungle interior and wetlands.
Cheldon communities also maintain more permanent settlements than modern Lizardfolk tribes. Villages and small towns can remain in the same locations for generations, giving the Cheldon a more continuous settled presence along parts of the Scalded Coast even though they have never formed a large continent-spanning population.
History
The Cheldon have lived in southern Aesala since ancient times. The Qhalleess Empire predates their known history and had already passed away before the societies familiar from later Aesalan history developed. The Qoraokllo Empire was likewise very old, but its mountain homeland kept it largely separate from the coastal regions occupied by the Cheldon. Most other known settlements and states on Aesala are younger than the Cheldon presence in the south.
Cheldon history has therefore remained closely tied to the Scalded Coast rather than to the continent’s major ancient empires. Their small population and concentrated homeland have limited their political reach, but their permanent communities have endured through the rise and fall of neighboring societies.
Modern Cheldon
Modern Cheldon remain concentrated around the Scalded Coast and nearby waters. Their settlements are generally more stable and permanent than those of neighboring Lizardfolk, and communities maintain long local histories tied to particular stretches of coast, river, or wetland.
Because the Cheldon are both geographically concentrated and relatively few in number, their communities share more cultural continuity than is common among widespread ancestries. The differences between individual settlements remain meaningful, but the Scalded Coast forms a common geographic and historical center for the people as a whole.
