The Scalded Coast is a vast region of primeval jungle, wetlands, rivers, and humid coastline stretching from the Vardar River and the Gulf of Keravnos toward the southern tip of Aesala. Dense vegetation and difficult overland travel have historically limited the reach of states based elsewhere on the continent, allowing older local communities to persist with comparatively little outside control.
The region is the principal homeland of the Lizardfolk and Cheldon. Lizardfolk populations extend through the jungle interior, wetlands, and river systems, while Cheldon settlements are concentrated more strongly along coasts, inlets, river mouths, and other navigable waters. Both peoples have lived in southern Aesala for thousands of years, although their modern populations remain relatively small.
Ruins belonging to an ancient Lizardfolk civilization survive beneath the jungle canopy. That civilization collapsed during the upheavals surrounding the Sundering, leaving scattered sites and descendant communities organized primarily on a tribal basis. Cheldon settlements generally show greater continuity of permanent occupation, with villages and small towns persisting at favorable coastal locations for generations.
The mountains of the Qoraokllo Empire kept that ancient state comparatively isolated from the southern lowlands, so Qoraokllo and the peoples of the Scalded Coast developed largely separate political histories despite their shared continent. The southern shores are also associated with Cain Moen of the Skyre Folk, whose presence reflects longstanding movement between Aesala and the Skyre Islands rather than a single political frontier along the coast.
