Halflings are a widespread people found in settlements across several continents. They live in independent communities, rural districts, ports, market towns, and large mixed cities, and no single region serves as a universal halfling homeland in the modern era. Their local identities generally follow the same political, religious, and cultural boundaries as those of their neighbors.

Halfling communities and family lines include several familiar ancestral variations, but these differences do not correspond to one shared system of nations or cultures. Kender are recognized as one uncommon halfling subgroup. Unless a regional history gives the distinction particular importance, these lineages are normally less significant than where a person was raised and the community to which they belong.

Halflings are sufficiently widespread that they often appear as ordinary members of otherwise mixed populations rather than as isolated enclaves. Elgaard in Tadrium, for example, included halflings among its diverse inhabitants, while even the small mining settlement of Waeldstone in the Skyre Islands has recorded halfling residents.
