The Jund al-Huraz is the permanent professional military core of the Huraz Confederation. Huraz did not begin with a large common army. The founding tribes supplied their own warriors, guards, and militia during construction of Zhar Qazir, Majra al-Qaranth, and Qaranth, while the early confederal government coordinated those forces when shared works required protection. A distinct Jund developed only after the new rivers, agricultural wealth, trade routes, and wider influence of Huraz created threats that no single tribe could reliably address.
The Jund has never replaced the military obligations of the tribes. Its enduring purpose is to provide the Confederation with forces that are permanently available for common responsibilities: guarding vital infrastructure, maintaining officers and specialists, responding quickly to attacks or internal emergencies, escorting confederal officials, and providing the command structure around which larger tribal forces can assemble. A major war still requires warriors, levies, supplies, animals, and local knowledge from the member tribes.
Structure and Role
The professional force includes infantry, cavalry and other mobile formations suited to regional conditions, engineers, scouts, logistical personnel, guards assigned to confederal sites, and officers trained to coordinate units drawn from different tribes. The Jund’s exact size has varied substantially across Huraz history. Periods of external danger or strong central government produced larger standing formations, while periods of greater tribal autonomy shifted military capacity back toward local forces.
Protection of the water system is one of its most important permanent duties. Damage to Zhar Qazir, the Majra, major channels, or river-control works could threaten populations far beyond the site of an attack. These installations therefore receive confederal protection even when they lie near territory dominated by a particular tribe. The Jund also protects portions of Qaranth and supports confederal enforcement when a dispute falls clearly under the Mithaq rather than ordinary tribal law.
The prohibition on open warfare among member tribes gives the Jund a politically sensitive internal role. It is not intended to function as an occupying army within ordinary tribal territory, but the Confederation must possess some means of preventing an intertribal dispute from escalating into war. Rashirs who deploy common troops too readily risk convincing multiple tribes that the center intends to subordinate them; Rashirs who refuse to act risk allowing the constitutional prohibition to become meaningless.
The Cult and Military Centralization
The Cult of the Stars rose during a period when much military power remained with the tribes. As the movement gained influence, however, it favored a stronger common state capable of pursuing restorationist aims and confronting external enemies. The Jund consequently grew in political importance alongside the Diwan al-Qaranth, and the central government gained greater influence over mobilization, strategic planning, logistics, and security.
By the time Huraz approached war with Tadrium in 8753 SE, the danger was not simply that a collection of tribes had become hostile. The Cult had accumulated enough influence within important tribal and confederal institutions that the machinery of Huraz itself could be directed toward war. The intervention that exposed Zhaken Amberheart prevented that crisis from becoming a full conflict and discredited the political movement that had supported the centralization.
Since the Cult’s fall, military authority has been moving gradually back toward the tribes. The Jund remains a professional common force because Huraz still requires permanent protection for shared infrastructure and a reliable command cadre, but its role is increasingly debated. Centralists argue that the Cult’s corruption does not make coordination itself dangerous and that a weak Jund would leave Huraz unable to respond quickly to invasion or sabotage. Tribal leaders answer that a large force controlled from Qaranth is precisely the kind of institution that becomes dangerous when the center is captured.
