The Majra al-Qaranth, commonly called the Majra, is the massive aqueduct that carries water from Zhar Qazir across the Qurnaan Desert to the highest levels of Qaranth. It is one of the foundational great works of the Huraz Confederation and the physical link between the stable Nymothun Crossing and the engineered river system that transformed the surrounding region.
Although Zhar Qazir contains and regulates the source, the Majra is what made that source useful at regional scale. The aqueduct had to carry an enormous continuous flow across terrain that could not otherwise support a city the size of Qaranth. Its successful completion allowed water to arrive at the top of the plateau system, where gravity could distribute it through the city and eventually into the North and South Qaranth Rivers.
Construction
Construction of the Majra began while Zhar Qazir was still being built. The two works advanced together for decades, with engineers adapting each project to discoveries made in the other. The Majra was deliberately completed first, because the founders refused to place the pyramid into full operation until the stabilized output of the Crossing already had a safe path toward Qaranth.
The project required contributions from all twelve founding tribes. The Dajhari supplied substantial stone, masons, surveyors, and engineering expertise; the Sahram provided important metals and skilled metalwork; the Mazhiri and other large tribes supplied animals, transport, food, and labor; the Zafari contributed knowledge of the Crossing and surrounding terrain. These contributions were only part of a much larger collective effort that continued across generations.
The engineer most associated with the initial design is Raqhadan of the Dajhari. His work established much of the overall hydraulic plan connecting the Crossing, the aqueduct, the city channels, and the two distant river systems, but he died long before the project reached completion. Later Huraz engineers inherited rather than merely executed his work, making alterations in response to failures, testing, changes in the settlement, and discoveries made over the long construction period.
The Breach of the Majra
One of the most serious remembered accidents of the construction era was the Breach of the Majra. During an early high-volume test, a failure in the control system allowed a destructive surge to enter an unfinished section of the aqueduct. Part of the works ruptured and water flooded construction areas below before the flow could be brought under control.
The disaster caused significant loss among workers and nearby camps and demonstrated that the project’s greatest danger did not end when the Jahra al-Qazir stabilized the Crossing. Reliable pressure could still be lethal if the infrastructure intended to carry it failed. In the aftermath, the Diwan al-Majra gained greater authority to impose common engineering standards, pressure tests became more incremental, inspections were formalized, and redundant control systems were added.
Later Huraz engineers treated the Breach as one of the events that transformed the project from twelve tribes cooperating on a construction site into a genuinely confederal engineering tradition. A structure carrying shared water could not safely be governed by independent technical standards.
Entry into Qaranth
The Majra reaches Qaranth at the highest level of the plateau city. From there, its flow becomes the Qaranth River, which moves through a deliberately engineered network rather than a natural river channel. The plateau’s elevation allows water to descend by gravity, forming waterfalls between tiers and feeding civic systems as it passes.
Within the city, the water is not treated as separate named streams even after its route begins to divide. It remains the Qaranth River until the primary flows leave the city. Beyond the plateau, they become the North Qaranth River and South Qaranth River, carrying water in opposite directions through the desert.
The northern route reused an older intermittent riverbed while reversing its former direction of flow north of Qaranth. Water now travels toward the great central lake, whose rising level eventually produced a new outflow to the nearby northern sea. Engineered canals were required there to control flooding. The southern route continues toward the sea on the opposite side of the peninsula.
Diwan al-Majra
The Diwan al-Majra is the oldest permanent administrative institution of the Confederation. It began as the joint organization responsible for coordinating the Crossing, engineering plans, labor, materials, construction schedules, and the distribution of tribal contributions. The founders did not anticipate the later breadth of the Diwan al-Qaranth; the much larger confederal administration grew gradually from precedents established by this first practical bureaucracy.
The Diwan’s authority expanded because the water system could not be governed safely as a collection of tribal projects. Engineers needed common standards, shortages had to be allocated, disputes over promised contributions required records, and later water use had to be coordinated across multiple tribal territories. The Breach of the Majra accelerated this process by demonstrating the cost of fragmented technical authority.
In the modern era, the Diwan al-Majra remains responsible for the Majra, Zhar Qazir, principal hydraulic controls, and other confederal waterworks. Its precise relationship with the Rashir, Majlis, and broader Diwan has changed across history, but control of the water system has always given the institution considerable practical importance.
Shared Water
The Mithaq al-Huraz established the basic principle that the water carried by the Majra exists for the Confederation collectively. The founders knew before construction was complete that upstream capture could turn a shared project into a source of permanent conflict, so the intended flow toward both distant river systems was protected from the beginning.
Detailed law came later. As settlements multiplied and agriculture expanded, the Majlis and confederal qadis developed rules governing canals, withdrawals, irrigation, and disputes between upstream and downstream communities. Those later rules changed repeatedly, but they rested upon the older principle that no member could divert so much of the shared water that the larger design of the river system ceased to function.
Modern Importance
The Majra still carries the water upon which Qaranth depends. Unlike many Mythic Era Huraz works, its essential purpose is largely physical: move water from Zhar Qazir to the high plateau. This allowed the aqueduct to survive the decline of large-scale divine magic better than infrastructure whose operation depended continuously upon ritual power.
That survival does not make maintenance simple. Portions of the associated gates, controls, protections, and distribution mechanisms descend from systems in which divine magic was incorporated directly into engineering. The modern Diwan must preserve, replace, or simplify those components while ensuring that interruption of the Majra never threatens the capital.
For modern Huraz, the aqueduct is both infrastructure and historical argument. Every day it demonstrates that the Confederation’s founding tribes once committed themselves to a project none of them could complete alone, and that their descendants still depend upon the result.
