The Qurnaan Desert is a broad arid region of southern Patoris and the historic heartland of the Huraz Confederation. The Tavashi and Liyonir both have deep roots in the region, and the twelve tribes that founded Huraz emerged from communities accustomed to surviving an environment in which reliable water could determine whether settlements flourished or failed.
Before the Confederation, much of Qurnaan’s history was shaped by an unstable Crossing to Nymothun. Its output varied dramatically over time, producing periods of flooding and sudden abundance followed by drought and famine when the flow weakened. Nearby tribes adapted to those cycles in different ways, but none could make the water dependable enough to transform the region permanently.
That changed with the founding of Huraz. The Mithaq al-Huraz placed the Crossing and the works built around it under common confederal custody, while the Jahra al-Qazir stabilized its relationship with Nymothun. Over the following generations the founders built Zhar Qazir, Majra al-Qaranth, Qaranth, and the engineered Qaranth River system that carried permanent water north and south across the desert.
The result did not turn Qurnaan into a uniformly fertile land. The transformed river corridors support settlements, agriculture, roads, markets, and irrigation that could not have existed on the same scale before Huraz, while broad areas away from those systems remain arid and outside the engineered water corridors. The contrast between dependable water and the surrounding desert makes the Confederation’s ancient works visible in the landscape itself.
Qurnaan also remains politically important because the waterworks are not ordinary local resources. Their protection and distribution are bound to the constitutional history of Huraz, and disputes over canals, diversion, irrigation, and access have therefore always carried implications beyond the communities immediately affected. Qaranth stands at the center of that system, but the desert around it preserves the older tribal territories and routes from which the Confederation grew.
