The Blackbanner Clan is one of the five great ruling clans of Krynhold and holds one seat on the Council of Five Hammers. Historically, the Blackbanners were the leading political force in the kingdom. Their influence rested less on control of a single trade than on administration, alliance-building, patronage, and a reputation for maintaining stability among the competing interests of the Five.
For generations, Blackbanner leadership was often treated as the expected center of Krynhold politics. That position never made the clan absolute rulers; the other Hammers retained their own constituencies and power. The Blackbanners instead excelled at building the coalitions required to govern a city-kingdom whose elite institutions were divided among several great clans.
Their predominance ended during the successful Stonesinger-led revolution of 8753 SE. The head of the Blackbanner Clan fled the kingdom and went into hiding after the old leadership lost control. The clan as a whole was neither expelled nor destroyed. It retained its Hammer, its families, and much of its accumulated influence, although it no longer occupies the leading position within the Council.
Modern Blackbanner politics are therefore shaped by the loss of an authority the clan once considered normal. Some members remain closely identified with the older political order, while the clan’s continued place among the Five requires it to operate inside a government now led by the Stonesinger Clan.
