The Council of Five Hammers is the sovereign governing body of Krynhold. It consists of the recognized heads of the five great ruling clans: the Blackbanner Clan, Silverhammer Clan, Goldtongue Clan, Foehammer Clan, and Stonesinger Clan. Each clan holds one Hammer and determines its own internal method for choosing the person who occupies that seat.
The five clans are broad political and familial institutions rather than single households. Their heads therefore speak for networks of related families, cadet branches, clients, dependents, businesses, military retainers, labor communities, and other interests. The Council’s authority is collective, but its members have rarely possessed equal practical influence. At different points in Krynhold’s history one clan has generally taken the leading role by assembling enough political support and institutional leverage to set much of the Council’s direction.
For much of the recent past, the Blackbanner Clan occupied that position. Its leaders were known for coalition-building and for presenting Blackbanner predominance as a stabilizing force that kept the competing interests of the other clans in balance. That arrangement ended in 8753 SE when a successful populist movement led by the Stonesinger Clan seized political control. The previous Blackbanner clan head fled Krynhold and went into hiding, but the Blackbanner Clan itself remained on the Council.
The Stonesingers did not abolish the Five Hammers after their victory. They consolidated control within the existing system and became the Council’s dominant clan. The Silverhammers, Goldtongues, Foehammers, and Blackbanners continue to hold their Hammers and retain enough independent wealth, patronage, expertise, and followers that the Stonesingers cannot simply treat the Council as a ceremonial body.
The resulting government combines continuity with a real change in political leadership. Supporters of the post-revolutionary order regard the Stonesinger ascendancy as a legitimate response to long-standing grievances among miners and other working communities. Traditionalists argue that the movement exploited those grievances to displace the previous leadership and concentrate power in its own hands. Neither interpretation changes the basic constitutional fact that Krynhold remains governed through the Five Hammers rather than by a single monarch or revolutionary office.
