The Crimson Company, commonly called the Reds, is an old Asnor monster-hunting organization based in Vrungend. Its traditions trace their origin to companions of Brynjolf Erobreren who protected the first Asnor settlements from dangerous creatures and other threats in the Skyre Islands. Over the centuries, the Company developed into a professional body whose members take contracts, investigate unusual dangers, and travel wherever ordinary local forces lack the knowledge or equipment to deal with a threat.
The Reds are closely associated with Asnorland without functioning as a normal branch of the kingdom’s military hierarchy. A Thegn or Jarl may hire or request their assistance, and the Company has repeatedly cooperated with Asnor rulers, but individual Reds operate with substantial independence when pursuing Company work.
Organization
The Company is led by a Hersir, an old Asnor martial title now preserved only by the Reds. The Hersir coordinates major operations, oversees Company resources, and represents the organization in dealings with rulers and other institutions. The earliest recorded Hersir was Mattenson Jaeger, whose tenure is associated with several traditions that remained part of Company practice centuries later. Kodiak Popo held the office during the early 8750s SE.
New members undergo a period of probationary service in which they train, accompany experienced Reds, and demonstrate that they can be trusted on dangerous independent work. Those accepted into full standing are known as Full Bloods. Full Bloods can ordinarily accept contracts on behalf of the Company within the limits of its rules and reputation, allowing small groups to respond to local threats without waiting for the entire organization to mobilize. Larger dangers can draw several groups together under the Hersir or another appointed leader.
Members of the Company are trained for dangerous field work rather than conventional warfare. Tracking, survival, monster lore, reconnaissance, specialized weapons, alchemical preparations, and knowledge of unusual weaknesses are all important to the Reds’ reputation. The organization preserves reports from past hunts so that knowledge gained at great cost can be used by later members. A senior specialist known as the Lore Keeper is responsible for maintaining this accumulated institutional memory and ensuring that old hunts remain useful to later generations. Lore Keeper is an office rather than a separate grade of membership.
Sentenced Service
Asnor courts sometimes sentence people to serve with the Crimson Company. Such members serve under tighter restrictions than ordinary Reds and cannot initially accept independent contracts in the Company’s name. The sentence may be for a defined term or for life depending upon the offense and the judgment imposed.
The practice is not limited to ordinary criminals. Under Asnor political custom, a claimant who makes a legitimate challenge to the Stadtholder, loses, and then survives the honorable death by combat granted to a non-treacherous challenger is bound to the Crimson Company. In this way, someone whose ambition threatened the political order may still spend the remainder of that life protecting the kingdom rather than being treated as a common criminal.
Sentenced members who demonstrate skill, loyalty, and reliable service can eventually be accepted as Full Bloods. The Hersir and the Company’s senior members can remove the restrictions attached to the sentence when they judge that the individual has earned ordinary standing within the organization.
Reputation
The Crimson Company’s long history gives it influence beyond the authority written into any formal office. Reds are often welcomed in isolated settlements facing monsters or unexplained attacks, and experienced Company leaders can possess significant personal influence with Thegns and Jarls. That influence depends on reputation rather than constitutional rank.
The Company’s red clothing and equipment have become familiar symbols throughout the islands. To supporters, the Reds represent practical service and a willingness to confront dangers others cannot. To people who have been sentenced into the Company, the same symbol can represent punishment, obligation, or an opportunity to rebuild a damaged reputation through difficult work.
