Mattenson Jaeger is the oldest recorded Hersir of the Crimson Company. Company tradition may place him among the companions of Brynjolf Erobreren who protected the first Asnor settlements in the Skyre Islands, and some later accounts even credit him with founding the Reds. The surviving record is too fragmentary to establish either claim with certainty, and much of what is remembered about Mattenson belongs to the Company’s own heroic tradition rather than a detailed contemporary biography.
Crimson Company annals credit Mattenson with leading Reds against a kraken that emerged along the islands’ shores and with defeating a group of Fomorians attacking Asnor settlements. Later generations remembered him especially for his skill with weapons and tactics, and Company instruction continued to invoke his hunts as examples of the practical monster-fighting tradition the Reds claimed from their earliest history. Whether every feat attributed to him occurred exactly as later Company stories describe is unknown, but his place as the earliest recorded Hersir made him an enduring figure in the organization’s institutional memory.
