A Skald is a learned court officer in Asnorland who serves as historian, adviser, diplomat, and keeper of cultural memory. The office is not merely that of a poet or entertainer. Skalds preserve genealogies, traditional stories, accounts of past rulers, political precedents, and remembered disputes, giving the nobles they serve a body of earlier experience from which to draw when confronting new problems.
Skalds are also expected to understand how history is presented. They may compose or recite traditional works, speak publicly for a ruler, carry messages between courts, or participate in negotiations where knowledge of old obligations and previous settlements matters. A skilled Skald can therefore influence policy without possessing independent political authority. Their importance comes from learning, judgment, and the trust placed in them by the ruler they advise.
Every Thegn is normally expected to maintain a Skald as part of the court, and important Jarls may do the same. The office can place a Skald unusually close to political power, especially when a ruler depends heavily on counsel or uses the Skald as a diplomatic representative. That proximity also makes the position sensitive: a ruler who trusts a dishonest or compromised Skald can be guided by a distorted understanding of both present events and the past.
