Aalund is the principal city of Inis Tierneg and the traditional seat of its Asnor Thegndom. It stands on the island’s western shore within a sheltered bay, giving it one of the more useful natural harbors in the central Skyre Islands. The city’s position places it amid the close channels linking Inis Muirin, Inis Olsang, Inis Markul, and Inis Nuadha, making Aalund important both to local government and to movement through the central archipelago.
Geography and Climate
Aalund has a temperate maritime climate by the standards of the Skyre Islands. Winters can still be harsh, but summers are generally longer than those experienced farther south on Inis Faerna. Green hills and mixed deciduous woodland rise behind a rocky coast, while the bay shelters ships from many of the worst storms crossing the surrounding seas. Volcanic features in the surrounding landscape have contributed to fertile soils and distinctive rock formations around parts of the island.
The harbor shapes nearly every part of the city’s life. Roads and smaller coastal routes converge on Aalund from the interior, while ships connect it readily to neighboring islands. Its position also gives the city military importance: whoever controls Aalund can influence traffic through several of the central island channels without controlling the entire archipelago.
Society and Culture
Aalund is strongly shaped by Asnor maritime traditions. Seafaring, martial skill, loyalty, and personal reputation remain important elements of public life, while stories of voyages, feuds, storms, and old raids are preserved by Skalds and repeated during feasts and public gatherings. Boat races, martial contests, seasonal feasts, and commemorations of historic expeditions are common features of civic celebration.
The city’s social life remains closely tied to extended families, households, and the retainers of prominent local leaders, but Aalund is large enough that merchants, craftsmen, sailors, and foreign visitors form an important part of everyday life. As elsewhere in modern Asnorland, raiding belongs primarily to older tradition and wartime practice rather than serving as the city’s ordinary economic foundation.
Economy and Trade
Fishing, shipping, shipbuilding, craftwork, and regional trade form the core of Aalund’s economy. Its harbor handles goods moving between the central islands as well as cargo traveling between the Skyre archipelago and more distant ports. Local smiths, shipwrights, leatherworkers, rope makers, and other maritime craftsmen have long supported both commercial vessels and the island’s military needs.
The city’s markets carry local foodstuffs, fish, timber, tools, weapons, imported luxuries, and goods redistributed from elsewhere in the islands. During periods of war, captured resources and the proceeds of raiding can supplement this economy, but Aalund’s enduring importance comes from its harbor and its role as a center of exchange.
Military and Defense
Aalund is heavily defended for a city of its size. Stone walls and watchtowers protect the principal approaches, while ballistae, catapults, and other coastal defenses command portions of the bay. The local militia is trained for both land and naval fighting, and the city’s ships can defend nearby waters, move troops among the islands, or join larger Asnor fleets when called upon.
The city’s strategic importance became unmistakable during the Asnor Succession War of 8723 SE. After the death of Thegn Gunhild Hildadottir, forces loyal to Ulrik Lindvig held Aalund as a major military position. The resulting Siege of Aalund brought together naval forces from Inis Faerna, troops from Inis Nuadha, forces from Inis Muirin, and scouts associated with Cain Seanain. The fighting demonstrated how control of Aalund could affect movement throughout the central archipelago.
