Gunhild Hildadottir was the Thegn of Inis Tierneg in the decades preceding the Asnor Succession War of 8723 SE. She had ruled since the death of her husband more than twenty years earlier and developed a reputation for drawing advisers from the most capable Jarls in her Thegndom rather than relying only on inherited court favorites.
During her rule, Gunhild substantially strengthened the authority of the Thegn’s seat. She brought more of Inis Tierneg’s military organization under central direction and established the islands’ first rudimentary banking system, giving her government greater administrative and financial reach than many neighboring Thegndoms. These reforms made Inis Tierneg an important regional power even without the mineral wealth of Inis Markul or the agricultural resources of Inis Muirin.
Gunhild opposed Ulrik Lindvig after the death of Thorgest Iarlsson and refused to recognize his claim to the Stadtholdership. She was killed by forces aligned with Lindvig during the succession war. Her death did not end resistance on Inis Tierneg, and the later fighting around Aalund became one of the major campaigns of the conflict.
