Realm: Xathoryn
Nature: Major agricultural and biological city-state
Ruler: Ember Crown
Primary Strengths: Cultivation, food, medicines, renewable materials

Selqara is one of the four great city-states of Xathoryn and controls some of the Realm of Flame’s most productive living territories. Its wealth is based not primarily upon mines or planar trade, but upon the cultivation of organisms adapted to Xathoryn’s heat, mineral-rich soils, unusual atmosphere, and other environmental conditions.

Its exports provide food, medicines, oils, fibers, resins, alchemical materials, and other biological products used throughout the inhabited realm.

Appearance

The territories surrounding Selqara are strikingly different from the barren volcanic landscapes outsiders often associate with Xathoryn. Cultivated basins, terraced fields, sheltered valleys, heated waterways, orchards of fire-adapted growth, and carefully regulated growing districts extend around the city wherever local conditions permit.

Many organisms cultivated there would appear exotic or dangerous to visitors from physical worlds. Some depend upon temperatures lethal to ordinary crops, while others draw sustenance from mineral deposits, heated water, volcanic gases, or intense light. Selqaran agriculture is therefore inseparable from the management of heat, water, soil, and local elemental conditions.

The Ember Crown

Selqara is ruled by the Ember Crown, a hereditary monarchy supported by powerful families whose wealth derives largely from productive territory. Control of land is only part of that power. Water, temperature regulation, specialized organisms, migration routes, and access to favorable growing conditions can all become sources of political influence.

Competition among these families can be severe because damage to a productive region may take years or generations to repair. Selqara consequently developed a political culture in which control of the environment is treated as both economic policy and national security.

Defense and Influence

Selqara’s military traditions are strongly defensive. Fortifications, controlled approaches, carefully prepared terrain, and intimate knowledge of the cultivated regions make invasion costly, while attackers must avoid destroying the very resources that would make conquest worthwhile.

The city’s greatest influence is often felt when its exports stop. Armies, settlements, healers, and industries throughout Xathoryn depend upon goods produced in Selqaran territory, giving the Ember Crown leverage far beyond the city’s immediate borders.
