Djozan is the title held by the head of each monastic order of the Djozanates of the Kenai Mountains. A Djozan is both the senior religious authority of the order and the highest political authority of the surrounding Djozanate, responsible for protection, judgment, mediation, and the order’s obligations to the other communities of the Kenai Mountains.
Succession
A Djozan personally names a successor. The choice is not confirmed by the other Djozans, the senior monks of the order, or a common council. The chosen successor must, however, freely accept the appointment before succession can proceed. Once that acceptance is given, the appointment is final and the hidden obligations of the office can pass to the new Djozan.
The transfer is governed by an ancient non-infernal binding covenant. Its operation reflects the deeper principle that a freely accepted obligation can become part of the metaphysical relationships through which Creation operates. The covenant does not transfer ownership of a soul or place the successor under infernal authority; it binds the office, the accepted responsibility, and the transmission of knowledge.
Every Djozan is entrusted with a secret body of religious knowledge concerning the earliest history of Creation, including teachings about Eshar, Veshar, and events otherwise known to mortals only through fragmentary myth. The Djozanates collectively preserve more of this history than any other known mortal civilization. The successor cannot receive the complete teaching until the appointment has been accepted.
Completion of the transmission kills the outgoing Djozan. The precise reason the covenant requires this consequence is not known outside the tradition and is not explained openly even within the wider monastic orders. The death is treated as an inseparable part of succession rather than an accident or punishment.
