The Kenai Mountains dominate much of northern Aesala. Their high valleys, passes, isolated settlements, and eleven major monastic peaks form the homeland of the Djozanates of the Kenai Mountains, a collection of independent but closely related monastic polities. Each Djozanate is governed by its own order under a Djozan, and no permanent central government normally rules the range as a whole.
The eleven peaks traditionally associated with the Djozanates are Chah Chian Peak, Chiu Pi Peak, Faw Tao Peak, Jam An Peak, Kai Song Peak, Liu Tiay Peak, Op Zuang Peak, Tham Pao Peak, Tia Wuan Peak, Tuh Lao Peak, and Wo Cay Peak. Most surviving accounts do not consistently associate the other named peaks with individual orders. Leopard Song Order on Kai Song Peak is the best documented exception; Kai Song is the highest of the eleven and the center of the largest Djozanate.
The geography of the mountains strongly reinforces the political independence of the orders. Communities are distributed among valleys and difficult approaches, while the monasteries provide protection, mediation, religious leadership, and judgment within their own spheres of influence. Wider cooperation usually depends on voluntary agreement or occasional convocations rather than standing centralized authority. The unified command created during the rise of the Grand Army of the Djozanates in the early 8750s SE was therefore an extraordinary break with ordinary Kenai political practice.
The highest reaches of the range contain a long-standing Planar Seam with The Last Refuge, the divine realm of Anadesia. The relationship is strongest around the ancient monastic peaks, where generations of disciplined service, mediation, and protection have reinforced qualities associated with Anadesia’s realm. The seam does not provide direct passage, but those sensitive to planar influence often describe the mountains as carrying an unusual sense of watchfulness, safety, and moral clarity.
The Kenai traditions also preserve an exceptional body of secret knowledge concerning the earliest history of Creation. The complete teaching is carried by the Djozans and maintained through the hidden Twin Dragon Monastery, making the Djozanates the only known mortal civilization to preserve substantial reliable knowledge of events that elsewhere survive largely as fragmentary creation traditions.
Other important sites in and beneath the range include Kilyarnham Prison, a shared facility for unusually dangerous prisoners, and Gorneduhr, an old dwarven city beneath the foothills whose deeper workings eventually opened into the Underdark.
