The Grand Army of the Djozanates was the name given to the combined forces of all eleven Djozanates of the Kenai Mountains between 8751 and 8753 SE. It was created under the apparent leadership of Hiuh Lao, the identity used by Dhuulan Havar while he served as the Sword Arm of the Leopard Song Order. Dhuulan used magical influence associated with devices supplied through Luther Mortanas and Zhaken Amberheart to compromise Djozanate leadership and bring forces that would normally answer to separate orders under a common command. Zhaken’s devices were derived from synchronization principles he had learned through the Clockwork Heart, reinforcing fear, loyalty, and political judgment until affected leaders became far more willing to accept Dhuulan’s centralized authority.
The Grand Army was not a normal institution of the Kenai Mountains. The eleven Djozanates traditionally maintain their own monks, guards, and other defenders, cooperating when necessary but possessing no permanent supreme military commander. Dhuulan’s ability to concentrate their forces therefore represented an extraordinary centralization of authority as well as a military threat to neighboring lands.
Dhuulan’s true purpose extended beyond the politics of the Kenai Mountains. He led Venorik Killianen, a clandestine Drow revolutionary movement from Terl’Narquel. Members of the organization were incorporated into the Grand Army and concealed by magical deception so that they appeared to be ordinary Djozanate soldiers. Venorik Killianen also used the wars to gather prisoners for Mortanas, ultimately delivering thousands into his custody.
In 8752 SE, the Grand Army assaulted Entwood. The Brass Blades aided forces from Entwood and Danto in resisting the attack, during which a substantial number of supposed Djozanate troops were revealed to be members of Venorik Killianen. The discovery damaged the cohesion of the attacking force but did not immediately end Dhuulan’s control.
After the battle, Mortanas ceased contact with Venorik Killianen and the infernal army its leaders expected never appeared. Dhuulan subsequently intended to use the Grand Army itself for an eventual assault on Terl’Narquel, replacing the external force on which his original plan had depended.
In 8753 SE, the Brass Blades returned to the Kenai Mountains and worked with the Bear Paw Order and Eagle Wing Order to dismantle the Grand Army’s leadership. They eventually confronted Dhuulan at the Leopard Song monastery. The Clockwork Heart could disrupt the synchronization imposed by Zhaken’s lesser devices, helping break the magical influence over the Djozans before the Blades exposed Hiuh Lao as a false identity. Dhuulan was killed and the Grand Army collapsed before the planned march on Terl’Narquel could occur.
The experience remains an important political memory among the Djozanates. Shared military action is still possible, but the orders are now especially reluctant to grant one person or one monastery continuing command over forces drawn from all eleven Djozanates.
