Nicomachus Ruanar was an inventor living in Entwood during the crisis of 8752–8753 SE. He was one of the limited number of confidants outside the city’s ruling families who knew the true nature of the Council of Entwood and understood that its supposedly successive generations of nobles were the same vampires maintaining new identities over time.
Nicomachus played a central role in Entwood’s defense against the Grand Army of the Djozanates. He developed a defensive cannon powered by Shriekstone, an unusual material associated with the abandoned dwarven city of Gorneduhr. The Brass Blades attempted to recover additional Shriekstone for his work, but much of the accessible material had already been taken into the Underdark by the Drow revolutionary organization Venorik Killianen.
When the Blades returned with less Shriekstone than planned, Nicomachus pursued an alternate design. The result was the Fist of Beskatel, a large manned construct used during the final defense of Entwood. Tusky and Darieth operated the machine while other defenders fought elsewhere in the city.
Nicomachus also developed an alchemical preparation that allows animal blood to sustain vampires. Members of Entwood’s council differ in how they feed, but this discovery provided a practical means for those who wished to avoid dependence upon human blood. The preparation became part of the quiet infrastructure that helped the council preserve its secrecy while continuing to govern the city.
