Venorik Killianen, usually translated from Undercommon as Silent Swords, was a clandestine revolutionary and paramilitary organization based in Terl’Narquel. In the early 8750s SE it was led by Dhuulan Havar, who later infiltrated the Djozanates of the Kenai Mountains under the identity Hiuh Lao and built the Grand Army of the Djozanates.
The organization drew heavily from Drow men who had little realistic prospect of influence within Terl’Narquel’s female-dominated political and religious order. Its membership included third sons of prominent families, houseless princes, discarded retainers, warriors and mages without useful patrons, and others who believed the city’s institutions permanently limited what they could become. Venorik Killianen presented itself as a movement against inherited privilege and the political supremacy of the city’s senior priesthood.
Its stated goal was to overturn the existing order in Terl’Narquel and replace it with a society in which political authority was not reserved according to sex or controlled through the city’s entrenched religious hierarchy. Many members appear to have believed that goal sincerely. The organization nevertheless reproduced several of the abuses it claimed to oppose. Its leadership remained concentrated among ambitious members of the existing elite, it relied heavily on secrecy and military force, and it accepted magical manipulation, kidnapping, and mass violence as legitimate means of achieving political change.
Organization and Base
Venorik Killianen operated from a concealed fortress within a deep crevasse beneath Terl’Narquel known as the Spider’s Maw. The site was difficult to approach and protected by multiple layers of programmed illusion that presented much of the occupied area as ordinary rock. Access was possible through hidden passages connected to the city’s deeper tunnels and through dangerous caverns associated with the underground river.
The fortress was functional rather than monumental. Barracks housed rank-and-file members, while dedicated training chambers were used by elite warriors and agents. Storage halls, workshops, and enclosed pens supported preparations for war, including the keeping of dangerous subterranean creatures intended for military use. A more elaborate central hall served as the receiving area for senior members and concealed access to deeper chambers.
The organization trained fighters, scouts, infiltrators, and arcane practitioners. Its members did not operate as a conventional mercenary company despite how outsiders sometimes described them. Mercenary work and resource expeditions could provide money, equipment, experience, and plausible reasons for armed Drow to travel beyond Terl’Narquel, but the organization’s central purpose was political revolution.
Alliance with Mortanas
By 8751 SE, Dhuulan had entered into an alliance with Luther Mortanas. Venorik Killianen supplied prisoners captured during its operations and during the wars Dhuulan was engineering in the Kenai Mountains. Thousands were ultimately delivered into Mortanas’s custody. The Drow knew that Mortanas wanted large numbers of living captives, but they did not understand the unique method by which he could seize mortal souls or the full purpose of the harvesting operation.
In return, Dhuulan and the other leaders believed Mortanas would eventually provide them with a large infernal force from Vharath. They expected to use that army to overthrow Terl’Narquel’s ruling establishment and place Venorik Killianen in control of the city. Whether Mortanas genuinely possessed a means to fulfill this promise, intended to fulfill it, or was simply manipulating Dhuulan remains unknown.
Mortanas also connected the organization with Zhaken Amberheart. Zhaken provided magical amulets and related enchantments derived from synchronization principles he had learned through the Clockwork Heart. The devices made it easier for Dhuulan and his agents to push fear, loyalty, perception of external threats, and political judgment into mutually reinforcing patterns. These tools were central to the identity of Hiuh Lao and to the movement that persuaded normally independent Djozanates to accept increasing centralization in the name of security and common purpose.
The Grand Army
Dhuulan’s infiltration of the Djozanates gave Venorik Killianen access to something it could never have raised on its own: a large surface army with legitimate institutions behind it. Members of the organization were folded into the Grand Army of the Djozanates, with substantial numbers concealed through magical deception so that they appeared to be ordinary Djozanate troops.
The arrangement served several purposes. It gave Venorik Killianen battlefield experience and access to captives for Mortanas, while Dhuulan used the Grand Army to strengthen his control over the Kenai Mountains. The assault on Entwood in 8752 SE exposed part of the deception when defenders discovered that many apparent Djozanate soldiers were Drow agents in disguise.
After the battle, Mortanas ceased meaningful contact with Venorik Killianen. Zhaken remained reachable for a time but provided little useful assistance, and that connection was eventually lost as well. With the promised infernal army no longer forthcoming, Dhuulan’s leadership began preparing to turn the Grand Army itself against Terl’Narquel.
Those plans ended in 8753 SE. The Brass Blades, Bear Paw Order, and Eagle Wing Order broke Dhuulan’s hold over the Djozanates and exposed Hiuh Lao as a false identity. Dhuulan was killed during the collapse of his regime, and the Grand Army disintegrated before it could march on Terl’Narquel.
The later fate of Venorik Killianen’s surviving members is not established. The organization had already committed enormous resources to Dhuulan’s strategy, lost its principal leader, and seen both its infernal alliance and its surface army disappear within a short period. Whatever fragments survived had to contend with the political establishment they had failed to overthrow and with the knowledge that some of their own activities were now exposed.
