The Clockwork Heart is an ancient Ordai mechanism associated with the Ordered Reach. Within its casing are thousands upon thousands of gears, wheels, escapements, and other moving components, many turning at different rates or according to patterns that can take hours, seasons, or far longer to repeat. Each is metaphysically related to some recurring process within the physical universe containing Kor Sirok: cycles of light and darkness, seasons, tides, orbital periods, geological rhythms, and countless subtler patterns that mortals rarely perceive directly.
The Heart does not cause these processes to exist and does not literally turn the world or create the seasons. It functions instead as a regulator of recurrence and synchronization. Physical and magical processes possess their own causes, but the Heart helps maintain relationships among repeating systems so that one cycle remains meaningfully connected to the next. In that respect it reflects the custodial work for which the Ordai are known: preserving reliable processes across spans of time far beyond mortal planning.
Origin and Qhalleess Custody
The circumstances under which the Clockwork Heart left the Ordered Reach and reached Kor Sirok’s physical universe are unknown. By the age of the Qhalleess Empire, however, it had come into imperial possession. Qhalleess scholars studied the mechanism and eventually kept it at Xarythar Bastion, where the empire maintained extensive facilities for containing and studying dangerous extraplanar beings, powers, and related phenomena.
The Qhalleess did not create the Heart. Their surviving work around it appears to have been an attempt to understand and use a mechanism whose foundational principles were older than their empire. Exactly how much they learned is uncertain, and no surviving modern institution is known to understand the artifact completely.
After the fall of Qhalleess, Xarythar Bastion deteriorated into the ruins later called Winterguard. The Heart remained there until Fenro recovered it in the early 8750s SE.
Attunement
Meaningful attunement to the Clockwork Heart requires more than ordinary familiarity with a magical object. A would-be user must learn to perceive relationships among enormous numbers of simultaneous cycles without reducing them to a single rhythm. Historical descriptions speak of prolonged observation, repeated divinatory workings, and the use of fine optical instruments to examine mechanisms deep within the Heart while the observer maintains continual attention to its changing patterns.
The danger lies in allowing the mind to synchronize with too much of the mechanism without sufficient preparation. The Heart’s internal motion is not random; it is coherent at a scale that an unprepared mortal mind may be unable to organize. A person exposed too deeply can continue to experience meaningful relationships among the patterns while losing the ability to connect those relationships to ordinary conversation or events around them.
Zhaken Amberheart abducted Fenro after the artifact’s recovery and used him during an attunement ritual at Adamantis Tower. Fenro survived but suffered profound mental damage. To outside observers his thoughts and speech no longer connected coherently with the world around him, even though his own perceptions retained an internal logic. The Brass Blades rescued him, but his mind was not restored until Tusky later reached Baba Yaga.
Zhaken completed enough of the ritual to attune himself to the Heart before escaping with Adamantis Tower.
Zhaken’s Derivative Devices
Zhaken used what he learned from the Clockwork Heart to create lesser devices capable of imposing artificial synchronization upon living minds. These enchantments did not simply command a victim to obey. They pushed fear, loyalty, perception of external threats, and political judgment into patterns that reinforced one another, making groups of affected people increasingly likely to interpret events and respond in the same direction.
Devices of this kind were supplied to Dhuulan Havar and became important to the creation of the Grand Army of the Djozanates. Their effects helped Dhuulan compromise senior leaders and turn ordinary concerns about danger, loyalty, and common defense into an extraordinary willingness to accept centralized control.
The lesser enchantments remained derived from relationships expressed far more completely within the Heart itself. When the Clockwork Heart was activated in a particular configuration, its mechanisms produced a low resonant hum that interfered with the artificial synchronization imposed by Zhaken’s devices. In 8753 SE, the Brass Blades carried the Heart into the Kenai Mountains and used that property while dismantling Dhuulan’s control over the Djozanates.
Keeper of the Heart
After Zhaken’s use of the artifact and Fenro’s rescue, Tusky became known as the keeper of the Clockwork Heart. The title describes custody and stewardship rather than full attunement. Nothing in the surviving record suggests that Tusky reproduced Zhaken’s understanding of the mechanism or subjected himself to the same dangerous process.
The distinction became important because the Heart is powerful without being a weapon in the ordinary sense. Its greatest danger lies in the possibility that someone capable of understanding its patterns can adapt principles meant to preserve coherent cycles into tools for controlling how other systems—and other minds—relate to one another.
