Early Life

Davrek’s parents were paupers and he grew up in squalor and was always hungry. His father, Elfinas, was absent most of the time and didn’t provide for the family when he was there. He was both unfaithful and dishonest, he beat Davrek’s mother, Kazira, in a drunken rage regularly. She was helpless and fearful. She didn’t standup for herself or Davrek.

Davrek discovered a talent for magic and a few gold scales on his lower arm; he used magic tricks to provide for himself and his mother when needed. He struggled to fit in with other children. After seventeen years, he was disgusted with his mother’s helplessness and his father’s drunken rages and infidelity. He left and struck out on his own to make his fortune and put as much distance between himself and his parents. He can’t help but send some money to Kazira now and then when she writes to him in need, but he always regrets doing so afterwards.

Davrek got a letter from his mother that there was another half-elf infant that needed a home, the infant’s mother didn’t want him. Davrek went and took the infant, knowing that he couldn’t be a real father, he ensured the child was cared for at an orphanage. He provided money and tried to be a sort of father figure as Phelps grew up, but he was not as present as he should have been.

After Davrek was on the streets for a while running small cons and entertaining folks at parties and on street corners, he became friends with a mercenary, Kippy Calhoun. Kippy introduced him to the Brass Blades, a mercenary organization in Elgaard. There he found friends, loyalty and a lot of coin. He worked with them for some time, and eventually he brought Phelps in when he learned that Phelps had ended up on a darker path.

Davrek met with potential clients to bring in contracts for the company when not on a specific job. He often found high risk contracts with large payouts, the risk was never as important as the reward. One job he found was from Brenton Woolfe to take down a merchant’s guild for fifty thousand gold, the payout was way too high for what seemed like a simple task, but Davrek only saw the gold. After some investigation the Brass Blades discovered the guild was a front for a criminal organization. On one of the last stages of a job, a team of five had infiltrated a party to plant the final documents when one of the infiltration team’s corpses was discovered. Davrek contacted the rest of the team to call off the job, but only Phelps answered.

They ran for their lives, not knowing what went wrong or why, and they met up a few blocks from their base of operation. When they reached the Brass Bastion, they discovered it had been burned to cinders. All that remained was a smoldering ruin and charred corpses. Davrek and Phelps were on the run from Luther Mortanas, head of the merchant’s guild/crime organization and tried to figure out what went wrong.
