Early Life

In the shadowed depths of Lochsmald, a small, tight-knit farming community, a young deep gnome named Abendigo found solace amidst the rolling fields and whispering winds. Born into a family of humble farmers, Abendigo grew up with one brother and one sister, their laughter and sibling rivalries echoing across the golden wheat fields. The family had escaped a harrowing past—enslavement under the cruel dark elves of House Glannath, third house of Olath Belanore.

Abendigo had vivid memories of their escape from the Underdark. At the tender age of five, they had been carried through treacherous passages, their brother just an infant in their father’s arms. Their parents bore the physical scars of their torment—whip marks etched into their backs, and their mother’s limping gait a constant reminder of their suffering. These stories and scars became a part of Abendigo’s very essence, shaping their view of the world.

Despite the community’s initial suspicion, an elderly human wizard named Rof Riverflame extended a hand of kindness. He convinced the townsfolk to give the deep gnome family a chance, setting them up as farmhands and eventually helping them settle on a plot of land outside the town. Rof saw potential in Abendigo and proposed taking him on as an apprentice. However, his parents, haunted by the dark magic of their former oppressors, forbade it, fearing that the arcane arts would corrupt their child.

Undeterred, Abendigo practiced magic in secret, mastering simple spells like prestidigitation by the age of seven. His fascination with magic grew, even as he hid it from his family. At fourteen, while attempting to cast minor illusion behind the old oak tree, a thunderous crack split the sky. From the heavens descended a monstrous, winged demon, its red skin blazing and weapons alight with arcane fury.

Chaos erupted as the demon laid waste to Lochsmald. Homes were engulfed in flames, the town guard fell with a single blow, and the demon tore the roof from Abendigo’s cottage. Before his eyes, his brother and sister were snatched and devoured, his mother impaled, and his father rent in two. Paralyzed by horror, Abendigo caught the demon’s eye. Just as it advanced, Rof Riverflame appeared, casting a powerful incantation to slow the beast.

In a moment of desperate instinct, Abendigo mirrored Rof’s spell. Their combined magic banished the demon, but the effort drained Abendigo, leaving him unconscious for seven days. He awoke in Rof’s secluded cottage, now orphaned and forever changed by the tragedy.

Rof, respecting the wishes of Abendigo’s deceased parents, initially refused to teach him magic. But he soon realized that without guidance, Abendigo would be a danger to himself and others. Reluctantly, he took him under his wing, teaching him to harness and control his burgeoning powers.

The attack fixed the purpose that shaped much of Abendigo’s mortal life. He became determined to master magic deeply enough to reach into the past and prevent the deaths of his family. That pursuit eventually drew him into the Brass Blades, the Rift Spar, and the extraordinary temporal events that preceded his apotheosis as the god of time. His efforts did not overwrite history or restore his family; instead, they became part of the same closed sequence of events that ultimately transformed him.
