The Twilight Veil is the metaphysical barrier created at the end of the Twilight War to prevent renewed intrusion into Kor Sirok from beyond Creation. It was raised through the final sacrificial act of Tarrasha, one of the original Fifteen of Vhar Qharath, after nearly a century of conflict with Yoshithlulb and the beings that had entered Creation alongside it.
The Veil did not merely close a portal or seal a single location. It altered the relationship between Kor Sirok and the Nascent Expanse itself, making the kind of sustained incursion that had driven the Qhalleess Empire toward collapse vastly more difficult. Yoshithlulb and its forces were banished as the Veil came into existence, and the metaphysical route through which the war had spread was broken.
The victory came at enormous cost. Tarrasha did not survive the ritual, the Qhalleess Empire was already too devastated to recover, and the Qhaerathi themselves were permanently altered by the same act that saved them. The Twilight Veil therefore occupies an unusual place in Kor Sirok’s history: it was simultaneously an extraordinary success, a civilizational catastrophe, and one of the most consequential changes ever imposed upon the structure of the world.
The Final Crisis
By the final stages of the Twilight War, it had become clear that the conflict could not be won simply by destroying increasingly powerful invaders. Yoshithlulb and the beings associated with it had spent decades adapting to existence within Creation, learning to persist under conditions fundamentally different from those of the Nascent Expanse. New aberrant forms appeared better suited to surviving the laws of Kor Sirok, and every attempt to counter them through greater magical force created further opportunities for adaptation.
The remaining leadership of Vhar Qharath became increasingly divided over how to respond. Some continued to pursue stronger weapons, more sophisticated containment systems, or increasingly ambitious applications of the same raw magical principles upon which Qhalleessean power had always depended. Tarrasha reached a different conclusion. If the enemy could continue adapting as long as the connection remained open, then destroying individual manifestations would never address the actual source of the war.
Her solution was therefore not another weapon. It was a change to the boundary itself.
The exact design of the final ritual is no longer preserved in any surviving mortal source. What matters is that Tarrasha used the immense magical knowledge available to one of the original Fifteen to alter the metaphysical relationship between Kor Sirok and what lay beyond Creation. The ritual expelled Yoshithlulb and its associated forces while simultaneously making their return by the same means extraordinarily difficult.
Nature of the Veil
The Twilight Veil is neither a physical wall surrounding Kor Sirok nor an ordinary planar barrier. The Nascent Expanse is not another plane within Creation, and transitions between Creation and what lies beyond it do not follow the ordinary relationships navigated through The Verge.
Instead, the Veil changes the conditions under which Kor Sirok can establish a relationship with the Expanse. The breach opened during the Qhalleessean age had allowed an unstable connection to become persistent enough for Yoshithlulb and its followers to enter Creation, survive there, and gradually adapt to its laws. Tarrasha’s working reinforced the distinction between Kor Sirok and what lay beyond Creation strongly enough to break that relationship and resist its reestablishment.
The protection is formidable without being absolute. Extraordinary power, severe damage to the boundary, or circumstances resembling those that produced the original breach can still create weaknesses. The Veil’s principal strength is that such connections resist becoming self-sustaining: beings attempting to establish themselves from beyond Creation encounter far greater difficulty maintaining the relationships necessary to persist within Kor Sirok.
The Banishment of Yoshithlulb
The raising of the Veil ended the immediate war by severing the relationship through which Yoshithlulb and its forces remained established within Kor Sirok. Many manifestations were expelled as the new boundary took hold, although surviving evidence does not account for the fate of every creature or aberrant form created during the conflict.
Yoshithlulb was banished rather than destroyed. The Veil ended its ability to maintain the foothold it had established within Kor Sirok, but it did not eliminate whatever continuity the being retained beyond Creation. Whether Yoshithlulb still exists in a form recognizable as the intelligence encountered by the Qhalleess is unknown.
The victory at the end of the Twilight War was therefore not the destruction of everything that had threatened Kor Sirok. It was the restoration of a boundary strong enough to prevent that threat from sustaining the relationship upon which its invasion depended.
Tarrasha’s Sacrifice
The final ritual required Tarrasha’s death. Her sacrifice was not an incidental cost of attempting magic beyond her endurance, but a deliberate component of the act through which the Veil was established. One of the original Fifteen, Tarrasha possessed a degree of continuity and magical connection unavailable to later members of Vhar Qharath, and the ritual consumed the very qualities that had allowed her to endure for millennia.
Before completing the Veil, Tarrasha transferred her immortality to Herzeiros, a trusted follower born long after the original Fifteen had acquired their powers. Herzeiros was therefore given a continuity no later Raven Court member would otherwise have possessed, allowing someone who understood the final age of Qhalleess to remain long enough to help safeguard what Tarrasha had created.
This transfer did not make Herzeiros another member of the original Fifteen or grant the same relationship with raw magic they had possessed. It preserved one specific quality that Tarrasha could no longer carry beyond her sacrifice.
Herzeiros survives into the modern era and remains associated with the continued protection of the Veil, although the true nature of that responsibility and the methods by which it is fulfilled are not widely known.
The Cost to the Qhaerathi
The Twilight Veil altered the Qhaerathi as profoundly as it altered the boundary around Kor Sirok. Before the Veil, the ancient Qhaerathi were capable of flight and possessed ordinary spontaneous speech alongside their exceptional vocal abilities. When the barrier was raised, both traits were disrupted.
Qhaerathi flight was lost completely. Their descendants, the modern Karathi, remain flightless, and no natural recovery of that ability has occurred in the centuries since. The change was not a gradual evolutionary consequence of the empire’s fall but a direct result of the metaphysical alteration created by the Veil.
Speech suffered a more complex disruption. In the generations immediately following the war, Qhaerathi descendants found spontaneous novel expression extraordinarily difficult, while imitation of voices and sounds remained comparatively natural. Mimicry therefore became not merely a cultural trait but a practical means of communication during a period when creating new speech was far more difficult than reproducing what had already been heard.
Over centuries, the descendants of the Qhaerathi gradually recovered reliable original expressive speech. Modern Karathi can communicate their own thoughts normally, but exceptional mimicry remains deeply embedded in their physiology and behavior. The speech limitations remembered in later folklore therefore reflect a real historical condition, though no living Karathi population remains universally restricted in that way.
Why the Veil affected the Qhaerathi so specifically remains uncertain. The ancient population had been deeply entangled with the magical structures used to create the barrier, and the Fifteen’s control of raw pre-Confluence magic may have tied Qhaerathi existence unusually closely to the conditions Tarrasha altered. The exact mechanism does not survive in any reliable record.
Effects on Magic
The Twilight Veil also contributed to the failure of the magical order upon which Qhalleess had depended. Vhar Qharath’s magic did not function through the modern Confluence or through the standardized spell structures familiar to later arcane traditions. The original Fifteen had obtained direct access to a naturally occurring source of raw magic, and later Court members used initiation, artifacts, and controlled methods derived from that discovery.
The Veil altered the metaphysical environment in which these systems had developed. Magical technologies that had functioned reliably during the empire became unstable, inaccessible, or increasingly difficult to maintain. Infrastructure failed unevenly, ancient devices behaved unpredictably, and knowledge that had once allowed the Court to shape intention directly no longer produced the same results.
This collapse did not immediately create the modern magical order. The later anchoring of Amundala and Phaethos to the moons and the eventual formation of the Confluence belonged to a subsequent age. The Twilight Veil instead marked the destruction of the magical assumptions upon which the Qhalleess Empire had relied, leaving later civilizations to rediscover magic under very different conditions.
Some surviving Qhalleessean artifacts remain functional because their internal structures preserve enough of the relationships under which they were created. Others work only partially or exhibit effects their creators never intended. This inconsistency is one reason ancient Qhalleessean sites remain exceptionally dangerous even when their original purpose appears benign.
Relationship to the Sundering
The Twilight Veil and the later Sundering address different boundaries. The Veil was created at the end of the Twilight War to resist intrusion into Kor Sirok from beyond Creation. The Sundering occurred much later and weakened the metaphysical relationships between Kor Sirok’s physical universe and the wider planes that remain within Creation.
The distinction explains why the two protections affect travel differently. The Sundering made ordinary planar transitions more difficult by weakening relationships through which The Verge, Vergeways, and Crossings can be reached. It did not create or replace the boundary between Creation and the Nascent Expanse.
A traveler capable of overcoming the isolation imposed by the Sundering has therefore solved only one problem. Magic capable of navigating the Verge between realities within Creation provides no automatic means of passing through the Twilight Veil or reaching what lies beyond Creation.
Weaknesses and Breaches
The Twilight Veil is powerful, but it is not infinitely resilient. Any barrier capable of interacting with Creation can be damaged, circumvented, or placed under conditions its creator did not anticipate, particularly across the enormous span of time separating the present age from the Twilight War.
Weaknesses are most likely to appear where ancient Qhalleessean activity already disturbed the boundary or where later events have damaged the metaphysical structure of the region. Surviving containment sites, failed experiments, locations heavily affected by aberrations, or remnants of the original breach can therefore be particularly dangerous even when no active opening exists.
A weakened region need not immediately produce a portal into the Nascent Expanse. More subtle symptoms may appear first: unstable physical relationships, recurring impossible geometries, creatures exhibiting contradictory traits, memories or events failing to align properly, or magical effects that resist ordinary attempts to resolve them. Such phenomena can indicate that the boundary between coherent Creation and conditions beyond it is becoming less reliable.
The Veil tends to resist these failures rather than simply collapsing around them. A local disturbance can therefore remain contained for centuries without becoming harmless, especially if ancient systems continue compensating for damage no living person understands.
This makes forgotten Qhalleessean installations particularly significant. Some structures that appear to be prisons, laboratories, or fortifications may also serve as surviving supports for portions of the Veil, whether intentionally or as a side effect of systems constructed during the war.
Herzeiros and the Veil
Herzeiros is the only known surviving individual directly connected to Tarrasha’s final preparations. Having received Tarrasha’s immortality before the ritual, Herzeiros has remained alive across the enormous span separating the fall of Qhalleess from the modern age.
Herzeiros’ continued role in safeguarding the Veil does not require constant direct maintenance of the barrier as though it were a machine that would immediately fail without attention. The Veil was created to persist independently. Herzeiros is instead uniquely positioned to recognize threats to it, understand surviving Qhalleessean systems related to its creation, and preserve knowledge that no modern scholar could reconstruct fully from ruins alone.
The extent of that knowledge remains deliberately concealed. Herzeiros is hidden in the modern era and does not reveal the truth of ancient Qhalleess freely, even to those who might otherwise be considered allies. This secrecy reflects both personal caution and the enormous danger of allowing the methods that once opened Kor Sirok to the Nascent Expanse to become widely understood.
Herzeiros may therefore know more about the Veil than any other living being without necessarily knowing everything Tarrasha understood when she created it.
Mortal Understanding
The Twilight Veil is not widely understood in the modern era. The Qhalleess Empire itself has largely passed out of historical memory, and evidence of its civilization survives only in scattered ruins, distorted traditions, and a small number of sources whose significance is rarely recognized.
Most mortals who encounter remnants of the Twilight War have no reason to interpret them as evidence of a metaphysical barrier surrounding Kor Sirok. A ruined containment facility may be understood as the prison of some ancient monster, while an aberrant creature might be classified as a planar outsider without anyone realizing that its origin lies beyond Creation altogether.
Even among scholars who accept that some great ancient conflict occurred, the term Twilight Veil may be interpreted as a poetic name for the end of an empire, an ancient defensive spell, or a legendary boundary against creatures from the Nascent Expanse. Very few possess enough evidence to understand its true scale.
The surviving effects on the Karathi provide one of the most widespread consequences of the Veil, yet the connection has largely been forgotten. Modern Karathi usually have no reason to know that their ancestors once flew or that their celebrated mimicry is connected to a catastrophic alteration imposed at the end of an ancient war.
The Twilight Veil has therefore succeeded so completely that most of those living behind it do not know it exists. That ignorance is part of the world’s safety. The greatest threat to the Veil may not be an enemy powerful enough to break it by force, but someone who rediscovers enough of the Qhalleessean knowledge that once made a breach possible in the first place.
