Tarrasha was one of the original Fifteen who founded Vhar Qharath and became one of the most consequential figures in the history of the Qhalleess Empire. She lived from the earliest age of the Court through the destruction of the empire in the Twilight War, carrying the direct relationship with raw magic that distinguished the Fifteen from every later generation of Qhalleessean practitioners. Her final act created the Twilight Veil, expelled Yoshithlulb and the forces sustained by its connection to Kor Sirok, and prevented the catastrophe that destroyed Qhalleess from becoming the destruction of the wider world.
One of the Fifteen
Tarrasha was among the fifteen Qhaerathi who encountered the natural phenomenon from which Vhar Qharath first gained access to raw magic. The Fifteen learned to shape magical possibility directly, without the stable patterns that would much later emerge through The Confluence. After securing their own relationship with that phenomenon, they destroyed it so that no rival group could reproduce their ascent independently.
The magical transformation that followed allowed the Fifteen to extend their lives far beyond the natural Qhaerathi span. They ruled for so long that later generations increasingly regarded them as something between rulers, ancestors, saints, and living symbols of the empire. Tarrasha therefore belonged not merely to the governing elite of Qhalleess but to the small circle whose continued presence gave Vhar Qharath much of its extraordinary institutional continuity.
The surviving record preserves much less about Tarrasha’s ordinary political career than about the final century of her life. She was nevertheless present for the empire’s rise, the long expansion of its magical institutions, and the growing confidence that encouraged Qhalleessean researchers to test boundaries no earlier civilization is known to have crossed.
The Twilight War
The Twilight War began after work conducted under Vhar Qharath established a catastrophic relationship between Kor Sirok and the Nascent Expanse. Yoshithlulb and beings associated with it gained enough purchase within Creation to sustain an invasion, adapt to Qhalleessean countermeasures, and turn what had begun as an unprecedented discovery into a war for survival.
For nearly a century, the Court attempted to defeat the incursion through weapons, containment, research, and increasingly ambitious magical projects. The empire could destroy individual manifestations and imprison extraordinary threats, but those victories did not solve the underlying problem. As long as the relationship permitting the incursion remained open, new forces could enter or adapt to replace what the Qhalleess destroyed.
Tarrasha eventually concluded that another weapon could not end the war. The problem was access itself. Rather than trying to overpower Yoshithlulb inside Creation, she began designing a working that would sever its established relationship with Kor Sirok and make the same path from beyond Creation extraordinarily difficult to reopen.
The Twilight Veil
Tarrasha’s solution became the Twilight Veil. The working required the unique continuity and raw magical relationship she had carried since the founding of Vhar Qharath; no later initiate could simply substitute for her. Its completion was therefore inseparable from her own death.
Before the final ritual, Tarrasha transferred the extraordinary immortality that had sustained her to her follower Herzeiros. The transfer did not make Herzeiros one of the Fifteen and did not give her Tarrasha’s direct relationship with raw magic. It preserved the continuity that would allow at least one person who understood the final age of Qhalleess to survive beyond it and help safeguard what Tarrasha was about to create.
The ritual severed Yoshithlulb’s established relationship with Kor Sirok, expelled the manifestations and forces dependent upon that connection, and established a persistent metaphysical boundary against renewed intrusion. Tarrasha died completing it. The war ended, but the empire she had helped found was already too damaged to recover.
The Veil also had consequences Tarrasha may or may not have fully anticipated. The surviving Qhaerathi lost their natural flight, their descendants experienced severe disruption of spontaneous speech, and much of the magical infrastructure created under the old Qhalleessean order ceased to function reliably. These effects compounded the social and political collapse already produced by the war.
Legacy
Tarrasha’s life embodies both the achievement and the failure of Vhar Qharath. She was one of the founders who destroyed the phenomenon that had elevated the Fifteen in order to preserve their unique position, and she helped shape a civilization convinced that sufficiently advanced knowledge could overcome nearly any limit. Ages later, she became the member of that same founding generation who recognized that survival required restraint rather than further escalation.
Her final act did not redeem every decision made by the Qhalleess Empire, nor did it restore the civilization lost during the war. It did preserve Kor Sirok from a sustained incursion from beyond Creation and created a defense that remains consequential thousands of years later. Few individuals in recorded history have imposed a change upon the world of comparable scale.
Modern knowledge of Tarrasha is fragmentary. Her role in ending the Twilight War survives in scattered traditions, but the true nature of the Twilight Veil, the magical capabilities of the original Fifteen, and the circumstances of her final preparations are poorly understood. Herzeiros remains the only known living person with a direct connection to those preparations, and she has kept that knowledge hidden.
