Herzeiros is a surviving Qhaerathi from the final age of the Qhalleess Empire and a former follower of Tarrasha. She was born long after the original Fifteen founded Vhar Qharath, but she lived through the closing years of Qhalleessean civilization and the Twilight War. Before Tarrasha sacrificed herself to create the Twilight Veil, she transferred the immortality that had sustained her to Herzeiros, making Herzeiros the only known living witness directly connected to the Veil’s final preparations.
Follower of Tarrasha
Herzeiros did not share the origin of the original Fifteen. The natural phenomenon that gave them their direct relationship with raw magic had been destroyed long before her birth, and whatever she knew of its discovery came through Tarrasha or other surviving members of Vhar Qharath rather than firsthand experience. She should therefore not be treated as a hidden sixteenth founder or as someone who possesses the full magical capabilities of the Fifteen.
Her importance came from her relationship with Tarrasha during the empire’s last age. By the final stages of the Twilight War, Tarrasha had concluded that the continued connection between Kor Sirok and the Nascent Expanse had to be severed rather than merely contested. Herzeiros was among the people close enough to Tarrasha to understand at least part of what was being attempted and to survive as a bearer of knowledge from a civilization already collapsing around them.
Before completing the final working, Tarrasha transferred her extraordinary longevity to Herzeiros. This preserved one quality of the magical transformation that had sustained Tarrasha across millennia without granting Herzeiros Tarrasha’s direct access to raw magic. Tarrasha died creating the Twilight Veil; Herzeiros endured.
Guardian of the Veil
Herzeiros has remained associated with the protection of the Twilight Veil ever since. The Veil does not depend upon her continuous attention in order to exist. Tarrasha created it as a persistent metaphysical boundary capable of surviving independently of its creator or any later guardian.
Herzeiros’s value lies instead in memory and recognition. She understands Qhalleessean systems connected to the war, can identify technologies and containment structures whose purposes have been forgotten, and possesses historical context that no modern reconstruction can fully replace. She is also uniquely positioned to recognize circumstances resembling the failures that once allowed a sustained relationship with the Nascent Expanse to form.
Her knowledge is not unlimited. She was not present for the founding of Vhar Qharath, did not experience the phenomenon that empowered the Fifteen, and need not know every element of the final ritual Tarrasha constructed. Even so, she may understand more about the Twilight Veil and the last age of Qhalleess than any other living mortal.
Survival into the Modern Era
Herzeiros remains alive in approximately 8813 SE, an extraordinary survival across the entire span separating the fall of Qhalleess from the modern world. She resides in concealment beneath Elgaard, and her true identity is known to very few people. Even individuals who encounter or revere her need not understand that they are dealing with a living Qhaerathi from the Dawn Era.
Her secrecy is deliberate. The knowledge that destroyed Qhalleess included techniques for reaching beyond boundaries the empire did not understand, and the surviving remnants of that knowledge can be as dangerous as the creatures once brought through them. Herzeiros therefore has strong reason to distinguish between preserving knowledge and allowing it to circulate freely.
Her continued existence also carries a profound personal burden. Nearly every institution, people, language, and assumption familiar to her from Qhalleess has vanished or changed beyond recognition. The modern Karathi descend from the Qhaerathi she knew, but the Twilight Veil altered them physically and their civilizations developed across thousands of years without continuity from the empire Herzeiros remembers.
Modern Knowledge
Herzeiros is not a public historical figure in the ordinary modern sense. Scholars know the Qhalleess Empire largely through ruins and incomplete records, while the existence of a living witness to its final age is almost completely unknown. Her concealment is therefore more than a protected identity; if widely revealed, it would overturn major assumptions about ancient history and immediately attract governments, scholars, magical institutions, cults, and others seeking access to knowledge that may be extraordinarily dangerous.
For those few who know who she is, Herzeiros represents something no archive can provide: a surviving perspective from the end of the Dawn Era. She can remember Tarrasha as a person rather than a fragment of legend, the Raven Court as a living institution rather than an archaeological puzzle, and the Twilight War as an experienced catastrophe rather than a remote historical abstraction.
