Yoshithlulb is a Primordial Change Spirit of the Nascent Expanse and the greatest known enemy faced by the Qhalleess Empire. Prolonged proximity to the surviving contradiction of the First Paradox allowed Yoshithlulb to retain identity and intention while preserving forms of incompatibility that ordinary Creation would normally force into coherence. It was not itself the First Paradox, but it learned to use persistent contradiction as a means of surviving and acting without becoming fully compatible with the rules of Creation.
The name Yoshithlulb is the one preserved in Qhalleessean records. Whether it was an approximation of the being’s own self-identification, a Qhaerathi designation, or terminology created by researchers of Vhar Qharath is unknown. No reliable surviving description establishes a single permanent physical form for Yoshithlulb, and later depictions should not be treated as authoritative appearances.
The Twilight War
Yoshithlulb entered Creation through the catastrophic relationship with the Nascent Expanse established by experiments conducted under Vhar Qharath. The earliest incursions appeared to the Qhalleess as dangerous but manageable anomalies. Their empire possessed immense magical knowledge, coordinated research, and specialized facilities capable of capturing or destroying many of the first beings that crossed the breach.
The deeper danger was that Yoshithlulb and the forces associated with it were learning how to persist within Creation. They adapted to stable matter, causation, magical relationships, and persistent identity without entirely surrendering the contradictory properties inherited from their existence beyond Creation. Defensive techniques that succeeded against one manifestation could fail against later forms that had learned from the previous encounter. Over nearly a century, what began as a series of incursions became the Twilight War, a sustained conflict that exhausted and ultimately destroyed the Qhalleess Empire.
Yoshithlulb was associated with numerous aberrant beings that emerged or stabilized during the conflict. Some were Primordial Change Spirits undergoing their own adaptations, while others were forms shaped through experimentation, host relationships, or attempts to create bodies capable of surviving within Creation. The Nharvek became particularly useful servants and allies during the war, although it remains uncertain whether Yoshithlulb created their modern form or merely recognized and exploited traits they had already developed.
Yoshithlulb’s original purpose in entering Creation remains unknown. Surviving interpretations variously imagine conquest, escape from the conditions of the Nascent Expanse, destruction of imposed order, or simple exploitation of a reality whose rules could be learned and manipulated. None is established strongly enough to be treated as its definitive motive.
Banishment
By the final stages of the war, Tarrasha concluded that Yoshithlulb could not be defeated merely through increasingly powerful weapons. Every continued relationship with Kor Sirok gave the invaders more opportunity to adapt. She therefore designed the working that became the Twilight Veil, intended to sever the persistent relationship through which Yoshithlulb and its forces had established themselves in the world.
Tarrasha died completing the Veil. Its creation expelled Yoshithlulb and many manifestations dependent upon the incursion, broke the route that had sustained the invasion, and made a similar persistent intrusion from the Nascent Expanse extraordinarily difficult. The victory preserved Kor Sirok, but it came too late to save the Qhalleess Empire.
Yoshithlulb was banished, not destroyed. Whether it still exists beyond Creation in a form that would recognize itself as the same intelligence encountered during the Twilight War is unknown. The Twilight Veil prevents the kind of sustained relationship that once allowed it to invade and adapt, but the setting’s later history demonstrates that the barrier can be damaged and that threats from beyond Creation remain possible.
