Xarythar Bastion, later commonly called Winterguard, was a Qhalleess containment facility in northern Patoris. The Qhalleess Empire used the stronghold to imprison dangerous extraplanar beings and to study entities whose abilities or origins made ordinary confinement unreliable. Its remote northern location added physical isolation to a defensive system already built around layered magical and architectural containment.
Purpose
During the Twilight War, prisoners included beings associated with incursions from the Nascent Expanse. Other dangerous entities from within Creation could also be confined there, including demons from the Abyss. Surviving Qhalleess records did not always preserve these cosmological distinctions as clearly as modern scholarship would prefer, but the threats were not understood to share a single origin.
The bastion’s design reflected its purpose. Cells, barriers, observation spaces, fortified passages, and arcane wards were intended to limit the ability of prisoners to act upon guards, other inmates, or the world outside. The Qhalleess were not merely storing enemies there; at least some portions of the complex were constructed so that dangerous beings could be observed and studied while contained.
Decline
Xarythar Bastion ceased functioning as an imperial prison after the collapse of the Qhalleess Empire. Without the institution that had maintained it, its defenses weakened unevenly and the complex deteriorated into the ruins later known as Winterguard. That decay did not make the site harmless. A prison designed for beings too dangerous for ordinary confinement can remain hazardous long after its original wardens are gone, particularly when no surviving authority possesses complete records of what was held there.
Winterguard retained enough surviving material to attract later explorers. Among the artifacts once studied and stored there was the Clockwork Heart, an ancient Ordai mechanism that had entered Qhalleess possession by means no surviving record explains. Fenro, mentor to Hannibal ‘Tusky’, recovered the Heart from the ruins before being kidnapped by Zhaken Amberheart. That discovery tied the abandoned bastion to events involving Adamantis Tower, the Rift Spar, and the crises preceding the Harrowing.
Legacy
Xarythar Bastion is one of the clearer surviving examples of the scale at which the Qhalleess attempted to manage threats they considered existential. Its ruins preserve evidence of both their technical sophistication and the risks of building systems whose safe operation depended upon an empire that no longer exists.
