The Nyvaryn are a naturally flying, owl-like people with ancient roots in Aesala. They existed as a distinct people before their incorporation into the Qhalleess Empire, although almost nothing reliable survives about their earliest societies. Under Qhalleessean rule, large Nyvaryn populations became part of the hereditary system of state service imposed upon non-Qhaerathi peoples.
The collapse of Qhalleess scattered the institutions that had connected these populations and left later communities to develop independently. Modern Nyvaryn therefore do not share a single culture, political identity, or religious tradition. Their ancestry has a particularly deep history in Aesala, but Nyvaryn individuals and communities can be found beyond those older centers as well.
Appearance and Flight
Nyvaryn are feathered humanoids with distinctly owl-like features. Plumage, facial patterning, eye coloration, and body shape vary widely, and resemblance to different kinds of owls is common. Their wings provide natural flight, while their hands remain capable of ordinary tool use and fine manipulation.
Flight has historically allowed Nyvaryn settlements to make use of difficult vertical terrain that would sharply constrain many terrestrial peoples. Mountain paths need not connect every occupied ledge, entrances can be placed far above the ground, and short journeys may cross ravines or cliffs that would otherwise require substantial detours. These advantages were especially important in the southern mountains of Aesala and later contributed to the isolation of the Qoraokllo Empire.
Such physical traits do not imply a universal Nyvaryn way of life. Architecture, occupations, clothing, and customs depend primarily upon the societies in which particular communities live.
Under the Qhalleess Empire
The Nyvaryn were not created by the Qhalleess and were not originally a branch of the Qhaerathi. They were an existing people incorporated into the expanding empire and assigned a subordinate legal position. Alongside the Theryn, they became a hereditary, state-bound population whose labor and placement could be directed by the imperial government.
This system differed from ordinary private slavery without granting meaningful political equality. Nyvaryn were not Qhaerathi citizens, could not normally become citizens, and could be assigned to agricultural, transportation, extraction, maintenance, domestic, or other state-directed work. Exceptional ability or service could bring greater responsibility and improved conditions, but it did not remove the underlying hereditary distinction.
Qhalleessean institutions justified this arrangement as ordered stewardship. Surviving imperial sources consequently tend to describe the system in paternalistic language and reveal much more about Qhaerathi assumptions than about how Nyvaryn communities understood their own circumstances.
The Twilight War shattered the state that maintained those relationships. Over the long ages that followed, Nyvaryn communities developed new identities whose connection to the empire became increasingly remote.
Qoraokllo
Nyvaryn form a major part of the population of the Qoraokllo Empire alongside Theryn and Karathi. Qoraokllo’s mountain geography favors peoples capable of natural flight, allowing settlements and routes to occupy terrain that discourages sustained outside contact.
Political power within Qoraokllo is not distributed equally among those peoples. The ruling class is Theryn, including the Tawaquatinsuyo and the empire’s principal governors. This has produced resentment among some Nyvaryn, especially where political hierarchy is reinforced by religious teachings that place the Theryn above other peoples.
The Qoraokllo priesthood of Kua teaches that Kua created the Theryn first and created the Nyvaryn and Karathi to serve them. These beliefs are important within Qoraokllo society but do not accurately describe the actual origins of the three ancestries.
Modern Nyvaryn
Modern Nyvaryn inherit several layers of history without being reducible to any of them. They are neither surviving subjects of Qhalleess nor universally members of a Qoraokllo-derived culture. Local history, nation, community, and family are generally more useful guides to an individual’s identity than ancestry alone.
The shared histories of Nyvaryn, Theryn, and Karathi remain relevant where particular communities preserve them, but they do not create a single modern political relationship among those peoples. What survives from the ancient world varies greatly from place to place.
