The Protectorate of Arkrist is the region of the Drakefire Peninsula over which Arkrist claims political and military authority. It extends south from the city through surrounding settlements as far as Istrus. The Protectorate is not a separate state; it is the name commonly used for the territory administered under Arkrist’s government beyond the city proper.
Responsibility for the Protectorate belongs principally to the Polemarch, who commands Arkrist’s military and oversees the Justiciars. Administration outside the city therefore combines local settlement life with institutions ultimately answerable to Arkrist. The extent of the Protectorate gives the Polemarch an important role not only in city government but in the affairs of the wider peninsula.
