Overview
Arkrist is the largest city on the Drakefire Peninsula and one of the largest cities in Kor Sirok. It stands at the northern end of the peninsula and claims authority over surrounding settlements as far south as Istrus, a region commonly known as the Protectorate. Founded many thousands of years ago by Dragonborn settlers from Auslura, Arkrist grew into a large and diverse metropolis. Its mild climate, access to ocean resources, and position on the Kairos River have all contributed to its growth and importance.

Geography and Climate
Arkrist has a comparatively mild climate shaped by its northern position on the peninsula, cool ocean currents from northern Aesala, and its proximity to both the ocean and the Kairos River. These conditions have supported a large population and helped make the city an important center of trade and settlement. The city’s harbor and river traffic connect it both to coastal routes and to settlements farther along the peninsula.
Arkrist is also much older below ground than it appears at street level. The maintained sewer system intersects forgotten tunnels, buried foundations, catacombs, and ancient structures collectively described as the Arkrist Undercity. Recent discoveries beneath religious and scholarly sites have shown that parts of the city were built over extensive draconic ruins whose relationship to Arkrist’s earliest history is still poorly understood.
Society and Culture
Arkrist’s population has become increasingly diverse over its long history, although its Dragonborn origins remain visible. Many of the city’s wealthiest and most politically active families are Dragonborn, preserving a strong connection between ancestry, family prestige, and civic power. Arkrist also has a reputation for substantial criminal activity, particularly in poorer districts, and the divide between wealthy and impoverished neighborhoods is pronounced. The Justiciars devote greater attention to districts where influential citizens live, making disparities in law enforcement part of the city’s social divide.
That uneven enforcement has helped produce a dense network of informal brokers, fences, smugglers, neighborhood protectors, and criminal organizations. Skimmer’s Row is particularly associated with the city’s black market, while the Wraith River Union has long maintained relationships across both legitimate and illicit businesses. Adventuring organizations such as the Leviathan Chapter of the Casque & Gauntlet also thrive in a city where problems routinely cross the boundaries between crime, magic, civic authority, and private interests.
Governance and Politics
Arkrist is governed by three elected senior officials: the Basileus, the Polemarch, and the Eponymous Archon. Each appoints two Junior Archons, creating the body collectively known as the Nine Archons of Arkrist. The Basileus is traditionally the city’s chief religious official and now serves as head of the judiciary, overseeing the Junior Archons in their judicial roles and presiding over the Dikastrio. The Polemarch commands Arkrist’s military, administers the Protectorate, and holds authority over the Justiciars. The Eponymous Archon is Arkrist’s head of state and chief bureaucrat and leads the Synod, giving the office particularly strong influence over legislation.
The title of Eponymous Archon reflects an older Arkrist practice of naming years after the reigning Archon, such as the second year of Kyron the Fifth. That practice has fallen out of use, and Arkrist now follows the common dating system of the Calendar of Kor Sirok. Elections for one of the three senior offices are held every two years, and each office has a six-year term. The Synod administers the elections, but the eleven noble families exert substantial influence over the process and commonly ensure that candidates come from noble backgrounds.
Economy and Trade
Arkrist’s economy benefits from its access to both the ocean and the Kairos River. River and maritime trade support the city’s markets and commercial activity, while its large and diverse population sustains a wide range of trades and industries. The West Market District is one of the most visible centers of ordinary commerce, while docks, warehouses, river traffic, and private brokers support a second economy that is less easily separated into legal and illegal activity.
Religion and Beliefs
Four gods hold an especially prominent traditional place in Arkrist: the Scalefather, Beskatel, Jhadric, and Adamhan. All four are invoked during the inauguration of major government offices, and religious festivals remain an important part of the city’s civic and cultural life. Other faiths maintain substantial institutions as well. The Grand Cathedral of Anadesia is one of the city’s major sanctuaries and preserves extensive catacombs beneath its modern structure.
Military and Defense
The Polemarch commands Arkrist’s military forces and is responsible for the defense of both the city and the Protectorate. Arkrist maintains trained military units under experienced officers and places considerable emphasis on readiness and discipline. The city is protected by walls, towers, and strategically placed guard posts.
The Justiciars serve under the Polemarch as Arkrist’s principal guard and law-enforcement force. Their duties include maintaining order and responding to the city’s high level of criminal activity, although their presence is particularly strong in strategically important and affluent areas. Dangerous prisoners may be transferred to Ashgate Prison, an island fortress beyond the city’s bay.
Arcane and Specialist Institutions
Arkrist supports a substantial College presence, including members of the College Arcanum and facilities used for instruction and research. The city also became home to a developing chapter of the Aegis Regnum under Marshal Jareer, whose work focuses on threats associated with the Nascent Expanse and other dangerous breaches in the protections surrounding Creation.
These organizations are independent of Arkrist’s government. They cooperate with civic authorities when interests align, but neither the College nor the Aegis possesses general police power over the city.
