Korth’s warlock abilities are tied to the entity he knows as the King in Yellow. His connection was not entered knowingly. His former mentor, Wandred Whitcomb, manipulated him during a period when Korth was desperate to save his dying wife and marked him with a strange sigil capable of telepathic communication and supernatural influence.
Korth’s history also became entangled with Koriana Ipswitch, whose actions had caused the deaths of members of his family. The pursuit of Koriana eventually led to Ipswitch Manor, where she revealed that the influence of the King in Yellow had once passed through her and had later been transferred to Korth through a willing host manipulated into accepting it. Korth chose not to kill Koriana and instead entered an uneasy truce with her so she could investigate the Pallid Mask and possible ways to break the connection.
The curse manifests through dreams, visions of Carcosa, changes in the mark on Korth’s arm, and occasional evidence of influence extending beyond ordinary spellcasting. The Aegis Regnum considered the condition dangerous enough to detain him temporarily. He was released only after the other members of the Phalanx argued that supervision and continued investigation were safer than imprisonment; Xanthos accepted responsibility for reporting signs that the condition had worsened.
