The Shattered Era is the current historical era in the Calendar of Kor Sirok. It began with the Sundering, when the gods deliberately weakened the relationships between Kor Sirok’s physical universe and the wider planes of Creation in order to contain a renewed threat from beyond Creation. Modern dates are commonly expressed using the abbreviation SE.

The name reflects the loss of connections that earlier civilizations had treated as enduring parts of the world. Many Vergeways failed or became unreliable, planar travel became substantially more difficult, and direct divine manifestation became all but impossible. Civilizations dependent upon strong planar relationships or large-scale divine intervention were forced to adapt to conditions their institutions had never been designed to survive.

The Shattered Era is not an age without magic or planar contact. Arcane and divine spellcasting remain widespread, surviving Crossings and Vergeways still permit travel between realities, and ancient magical works continue to function throughout Kor Sirok. The distinction is one of scale and reliability. Relationships that had once supported routine extraplanar contact or immense divine projects became exceptional rather than ordinary.

Most contemporary nations and institutions developed within these conditions and therefore regard them as the normal structure of the world. Earlier eras are known through history, surviving monuments, religious traditions, and ancient systems whose capabilities can exceed those of their modern inheritors.

The most significant recent catastrophe of the era was the Harrowing of 8753 SE, when Othrazhul appeared in the skies above Kor Sirok while the dead rose and organic matter decayed across the world. The Brass Blades destroyed Othrazhul’s manifestation and forced the Primordial Change Spirit back beyond Creation, but famine and political disruption continued long after the immediate supernatural crisis ended.

The present is approximately 8813 SE, around sixty years after the Harrowing. The world has substantially recovered from the catastrophe, although its demographic, political, and institutional consequences remain within living memory.
