Terl’Narquel is a major Drow city-state in the Underdark. The Brass Blades visited the city in 8752 SE while attempting to recover Shriekstone that had been removed from the abandoned dwarven workings at Gorneduhr. Their investigation led them to the clandestine revolutionary organization Venorik Killianen, which operated from a hidden fortress beneath the city.

Terl’Narquel occupies a large cavern crossed by an underground river. Much of the city is built around layered stone districts, noble compounds, military and magical academies, workshops, and a broad central bazaar divided among several markets. An extensive mushroom forest known as the Spore Rift occupies part of the cavern and functions as both productive land and a large open space within the city. Black-metal walkways and elevated passages cross portions of the cavern above the lower streets and river.

The city has two principal entrances and several substantial secondary passages, along with many smaller routes through the surrounding rock. Important estates and secure districts protect nearby passages with traps, guards, and magical defenses. The dangerous geography of the Underdark makes control of these approaches an important part of Terl’Narquel’s security.

Government and Religion

In the 8750s SE, Terl’Narquel’s political order was strongly matriarchal and closely intertwined with a female-dominated priesthood of Kalabold. Senior religious offices were held by women, and elite families relied heavily on relationships with the priesthood for legitimacy, influence, and access to privileged information. The arrangement concentrated political and religious authority in overlapping networks rather than placing every decision in the hands of a single ruler.

The local interpretation of Kalabold differs visibly from many surface traditions. In Terl’Narquel the god is conventionally depicted as a veiled woman and addressed with feminine titles. Priestesses teach that the deity’s hidden nature makes any single outward identity a mask, but the city’s inherited sacred image is explicitly female. The tradition places particular emphasis on control of secrets, selective disclosure, hidden loyalties, and the ability to govern relationships through unequal knowledge.

That theology became one of the principal institutions opposed by Venorik Killianen. The organization drew support from Drow men who believed the city’s religious and political structure denied them meaningful paths to authority, and its leaders promised to end the priesthood’s privileged position if they seized control.

Military and Civic Life

Terl’Narquel maintains substantial military forces appropriate to a large Underdark city. Guard formations protect its gates and major districts, while specialized schools train warriors, arcane practitioners, and members of the senior priesthood. Noble estates maintain additional armed retainers and magical protections of their own.

The central bazaar is one of the city’s most densely occupied districts and brings together merchants, craftsmen, laborers, travelers, and enslaved populations from several ancestries. The city’s economy reaches beyond its immediate cavern through trade, mercenary activity, resource expeditions, and controlled movement along known Underdark routes.

That outward activity included expeditions into the abandoned dwarven mines connected to Gorneduhr. Members of Venorik Killianen removed much of the accessible Shriekstone before the Brass Blades arrived in 8752 SE. The event demonstrates that Terl’Narquel’s guarded political culture did not prevent its factions from operating far beyond the city when valuable resources or strategic opportunities were involved.
